BRIDGE VIEW STUD

HOME OF GOODWOOD RUPERT.

high quality and production

Production combined with quality has always been the keynote that- has set the time for the progressive . Jersey breeder and more so that, ever in these days of anxiety must those two all important factors be made the goal. At Bridge View, the stud farm of Mr. A- L. Hooper, Brixton, Waitara, a life-time has been devoted to the development of quality and production, and as a result many beautiful Jersey cattle are to be viewed. Mr. Hooper has been submitting annual offerings for his stud for over twelve years, and it is no wonder that they have been keenly sought, several realising over 150gns. In addition the sales have proved so satisfactory to the purchasers that Mr. Hooper has had inquiries from alt parts of the North Island, as well as the South Island. There promises to be very keen competition for this year's offering of six selected cows, live two-year and yearling heifers, one senior herd sire, a*-d nine yearling stud bulls to be submitted at the combined Jersey sale which is to be held at Mr. Truby King’s stud farm on Tuesday, May 31. Sixtyfour Bridge View Jerseys have C.O.R. records, and of that number 43 had been tested by Mr. Hooper himself, their average production being over 5001 b of fat. Two-thirds of them were tested as junior two-year-olds. If for nothing else Bridge View can lay claim to high distinction as the home of Goodwood Rupert, now a gold medal champion butterfat bull, his five daughters having put up the following great record: Bridge View Jersey Queen, 163.971 b fat; Bridge View Tulip, 6401 b fat; Madiera’s Frolic, 6d2lb fat; Bridge View’s Sungleam, 6001 b fat to date (unfinished) ; and Cresdale Winsome, 5251 b fat; an average of 6221 b fat, which is thought to be a Dominion record. Three of them as two-year-olds have an average of 6641 b fat —-a Dominion record. Bridge View Tulip, now owned by Mr. J. S. Jones, is out of Bridge View Lady Viola C, a daughter of the imported Bright Sultan. This year as a senior two-year-old Bridge Vie-w Tulip is breaking the Dominion record at present, heading the list with 490.341 b of butterfat in 230 days. Bridge View Promise, a senior herd sire that is for sale with this offering, is a full brother to Bridge View Tulip. He has left some wonderful looking heifers, which are to be placed under C.O.R. test next year, when Mr. Hooper expects great results. Several of the females to be submitted arc in calf to this fine bull, which is certainly worthy of going into any pedigree herd. Indeed Mr. Hooper would not think of parting with him, were it not for the fact that too many of the herd are too closely related to him. Several of the offering have a double strain to Goodwod Rupert, who holds the New Zealand record -for the first three daughters under C.O.R. averaging 6641 b of fat. Bridge View Queen has left a heifer calf for the past five years, and some of her- heifers will be under test this year. Mr. Hooper has always adopted the policy of keeping only bulls from dams of butterfat production, and true to ty-pe. Every one of the ten bulls that are to be offered has been bred from Viola's Frisky, which had a record ot 5511 b of butterfat at two years and 6461 b of butterfat at three years. Many of, them have a double strain of this valuable blood. Some of her best daughters have been mated by Dlr. Hooper with the best outside blood, thus introducing fresh strains. The bulls therefore are also a very typy lot that could compete with success in any show ring. Many of the cows under O.H.T. average over 500 pounds of butterfat. The condition of the stock throughout is a tribute to their constitution, as Dlr. Hooper has pastured throughout the year as many as 72 head of stock on his sixty-acre- holding. All the cows and heifers on the place have been tested under either the C.O.R. or O.H.T. systems. A glance at the catalogue will be sufficient to convince the fancier of the value of the offering, but perhaps the gems of the collection may be found in Bridge View Lady Maid, a rising three-year-old heifer by Zenia’s Frisky Lad out of Bridge View’s Golden Maid (a h.c. cow). In this heifer there is a double strain of Viola’s Frisky. She is also in calf to Bridge View Promise, which carries further Viola’s Frisky blood. Bridge View Patty, a rising two year old, is also by Zenia’s Frisky Lad, out.of Bridge. View’s Pet, which put up 5221 b of butterfat as a junior two-year-old. She is in-calf to Bridge View’s Eclipse. This bull is something exceptional, being out of Bridge View’s Jersey Queen (the 7331 b butterfat cow as a two-year-old), by Bridge View’s Laddie, who also is a son of Goodwood Rupert. All the cows that have been milked carry a written guarantee as to soundness and calving date.
