COTTON TIED WITH TWINE

SOUTHPORT PROFESSIONAL GOLF. CLOSE MATCH FOR £l5OO TROPHY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. London, May 15. Three thousand watched Henry Cotton retain the professional 1500-guinea golf trophy at Southport after one of the grimmest encounters in its history. Cotton tied with W. Twine with 281 and the replay resulted: Cotton 145, Twine 146. Cotton led in the first round with 71 and thereafter Twine, who had taken 73, made a most plucky recovery. Once three down, he squared at the 34th by holing a sixyard putt. Cotton won the next hole and halved the last, taking 74 to Twine’s 73.

Compston, who was fifth equal in the tournament, equalled the course record of 67 in a round played in torrential rain. Following Cotton and Twine, the next best were: Hesketh, A. Perry, 282; Compston, R. Whitcombe, 290; Mitchell, Padgham, 291; Allis, 292; Dennis, Havers, 295; Duncan, 296.
