ACTIVITY OF UNEMPLOYED
MOVE TO RAISE FUNDS MADE. The executive of the Stratford unemployed has appointed an entertainment committee to promote a euchre party and dance, the funds from which will be used to provide cheaper groceries for unemployed. An endeavour will be made to organise a working bee for those who wish to get firewood. A beast donated by Mr. Wickham, Bird Road, was distributed yesterday by Mr. F. Cook.- It is hoped to continue the distribution of meat at Id a lb during the winter. An offer from Mr. A. G. Craig of several boxes of honey has been received. The executive expects to open a depot for the receipt of donations, and in the meantime those making donations arrange with Mr. S. Spence. The Borough Council will be asked to make a reduction in the charge of lighting to unemployed. Following discussion on the days worked and the pay received by different men the executive will ask for copies of the weekly pay-sheet to be supplied to it. FRONTIERSMEN’S DANCE. ELTHAM TROOP VISITS NGAERE. The dance at Ngaere on Thursday held by the Eltham troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen was successful and the attendance was good in view of the unfavourable weather. Miss M. Lawrence danced the sailor’s hornpipe and a skipping dance, the accompaniments being played by Miss C. Shirras. A tap dance was c-.iven by Mies G. Briscoe. Extras were played by Mr. T. Walsh, Mrs. Langley (Hawera), Mr. Davidson (Ngaere), Mr. Bain, Mr. C. Gibbons and Mr. McDonald. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr. G. Littlejohn and Miss Purdie. Supper was provided by Mesdames Gyde and Murray. The music was played by Mrs. Attrill’s orchestra. PERSONAL. There is no improvement in the condition of Mr. Jonas Masters. Mr. Milton Jenkin and Mr. George Rimmer, of the Auckland Training College, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. Jenkin, Mountain Road, Stratford. GENERAL ITEMS. Prizewinners at the Eltham Oddfellows’ Lodge euchre party were Mrs. Scown 1, Mrs. E. Duss 2, Miss M. Armstrong consolation, Mr. H. Towers 1, Mr. E. Burgess 2 and Mr. H. Julian consolation. There was a large attendance at aeuchre party and dance in the Rawhitiroa Hall on Thursday. Prizewinners were Mrs. Glentworth and Mr. O'Connor, with Mr. Paton runner-up. Dance music was played by Mr. Silver jun., extra dances being played for by Miss G. Silver, Miss R. George and Mrs. L. Gernhoefer. The Stratford B men’s hockey team playing at Waitara on Thursday defeated Waitara by 7 goals to nil. The scorers were T. Boyle (2), L. Mclnnis (2), C. Currie, D. Bullock and D. Vincent. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS Mr. M. McDonald, land agent, Stratford, has several cheap farms for disposal by sale and a straight-out lease of 200 acres at £1 10s per acre.
