DEFENCE AGAINST TARIFF
LATIN AMERICAN SCHEME
CUSTOMS UNION PROPOSAL REPRISAL AGAINST U.S.A. - . ■ —-y ARGENTINA, PERU, MEXICO By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.30 p.m. New York, May 12. The Lima (Peru) correspondent of the New York Times states that the Peruvian Foreign Minister, Senor Alberto Fruendt Rosell, to-day revealed that several leading Spanish-American republics, including Peru, Chile and Mexico, have started negotiations towards tho formation of a <<Latin-Ameri-can customs union” for united defence and a concentrated reprisal against the United States’ tariff policy. Peru and Chile have virtually reached an agreement concerning the measures they will take in the event of the copper tariff pending before Congress at Washington being passed. It is expected Argentina and other countries will join. It is recalled that Argentina started a similar move several years ago when Congress placed a tariff on agricultural products. Peru and Chile, however, were then unaffected, but they are now anxious to reorganise tho movement.
