LORRY FALLS INTO GORGE
DROP OF ABOUT 60 FEET.
PAINFUL INJURIES TO DRIVER.
Palmerston North, May 4.
A motor-lorry accident occurred in the vicinity of the Ballance Bridge at the Woodville entrance to Manawatu Gorge, Mosrs. Wiliam Doubney and Phillip Wilson, of Napier, having a miraculous escape from death when a two-ton lorry dropped over a 60ft bank. The bodywork of the vehicle and the load of galvanised iron tanks were torn completely off half-way down the descent, while the chassis and the two occupants were thrown against a willow tree only a few feet from the flooded waters of the tributary stream below. The lorry was proceeding from Palmerston North to Napier and the accident occurred at about one o'clock in the morning. Mr. Doubney, the driver, suffered painful injuries to one leg, while his companion escaped with a cut hand and bruises. The men were taken to Dannevirke by taxi and admitted to hospital. The wrecked lorry was recovered later and taken to Woodville.
