Stressing that as the fall in wholesale prices is far greater than that in retail prices there is room for a substantial rise without effect on the cost of living, the Midland Bank’s monthly review is accepted as representing the view of the Hon. Reginald McKenna, the bank’s chairman, who says that there is only one policy logically defensible for Britain —the deliberate creation of conditions which ensure a moderate rise in commodity prices in terms of sterling induced by a calculated and controlled expansion and cheapening of the supply of money here. With wise leadership in monetary affairs Britain may bring the whole world back to relative prosperity,” says the report.
