MINE BLAZES FIERCELY

SMOKE COVERS DISTRICT £20,000 DAMAGE AT N.S.W. PIT MAIN RAILWAY MENACED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 9.5 pan. Sydney, April 26. The colliery fire at Greta is still (blazing fiercely. The whole countryside is darkened by a pall of black emoke and objectionable fumes. Pithead buildings and machinery have been totally destroyed. The damage is estimated at £20,000.

The fire last night extended considerably and became a definite menace to the safety of the main northern railway line. The flames, which rose to a height of 60 feet, caught the pithead of the abandoned central colliery and destroyed practically all the overhead structure. Smoke issuing from openings in the earth killed vegetation and affected the householders’ water supplies. Many fear an explosion may wreck their homes.
