OKATO DISTRICT NEWS
DAIRY PRODUCTION INCREASES. The harvest sale and card evening at Okato, while not largely attended, proved a success. A competition arranged by Mrs. J. S. Fox was won by Mr. J. D. Fox, Tumahu, and the euchre trophies were gained by Mr. L. H. Andrews, aud Dlrs. W. Corbett, who played off with Mrs. K. A. Andrews and Mrs. E. B. Corbett. Several players qualified for the consolation prize, but it was unclaimed. Thanks to tho mild autumn, local factories have overtaken the decrease in the early months of the season, and the yield is keeping up remarkably well. Pastures generally are in good heart, and the area in crops for winter appears to be much larger than usual. The country on that portion of Carrington Road recently opened by the Public Works Department is showing marked improvement, and it will be a pity if the bridges are left uncompleted. Though many consider this land does' not justify reading, the visible results do not confirm this impression. There is one farm on this light country which shows forcibly the result of industry and commonsense management. The property, farmed by Messrs. Cocksedge and Hickford, was producing 9000 lb of fat a few years ago, but this year had produced 30,0001 b, this year’s increase being approximately 80001 b. A large stack of hay belonging to Mr. L. O’Sullivan, Oxford Road, caught fire on Friday through overheating. A small portion from the top was saved, but the remainder soon became a charred mass.
