FARMERS’ UNION ACTIVITY

ANNUAL MEETING AT HUIRANGI.

MR. W. HALL AGAIN PRESIDENT.

The annual meeting of the Huirangi branch of the Farmers’ Union was held last night, the president, Mr. W. Hall, presiding over a representative attendance. Mr. H. E. Blyde, provincial president for North Taranaki, was also present.

The report showed that the branch had a membership of 49, the organiser, Mr. Nelson, having enrolled several new ones. The meetings had been well attended throughout the year, and it was suggsted that lectures should be held during the coming year at Brixton, providing arrangements could be made with Mr. Johnston for the use of his room. Hay, ensilage and pasture competitions had been held, the points awarded the winners comparing very favourably with those awarded in other districts. In the pasture competition Mr. W. Sutton had come within half a point of winning the championship for North Taranaki. The champion crop of carrots for North Taranaki was grown in the district, though the winner was not a member of the union. Members had availed themselves of the advantages of direct trading with the South Island. The balance-sheet showed that the year had begun with a credit of £8 15s 5d and had ended with a credit of £9 2s Sd. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. W. Hall (re-elected); vicepresident, Messrs. F. Blattler and E. Allen; secretary, Mr. F. Y. Andrews (reelected); delegate to provincial executive, Mr. W. Hall; delegate to provincial conference, Mr. C. Mackinder. Mr. Blyde gave an address on the aims and objects of the union, stressing the importance of farmers loyally supporting their own organisation. Those present were entertained at supper at the conclusion of the meeting.
