COMMEMORATION OF ANZAC

BRITISH LEAGUE’S LUNCHEON. RACE FOR EMPIRE PROSPERITY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, April 25. Sir Granville Ryrie, Australian High Commissioner, presided at the British Empire Service League’s Anzac Day luncheon. Those in attendance included Brigadier-General J. H. Cannan, a New Zealander, and Lieut.-Colonel Fitzherbert. Sir William Birdwood, responding to the toast of those who served at Gallipoli, said the world provided no better examples of real democracies than Australia and New Zealand. They would never fight unless they believed the cause righteous. Yet their men gave their lives willingly at Anzac knowing that they fought in a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook the amazing bravery of the 29th Division, but the Anzacs fought with almost reckless bravery. Sir Thomas Wilford, New Zealand High Commissioner, toasting the Ottawa conference, said that any delegation" going there with the intention of .-winning would be an enemy, because if anyone won some other* member of the Empire lost. Whatever the outcome, he hoped that there would be a permanent' '• Empire economic council. Even if reciprocity agreements were reached at Ottawa there must be constant liaison to carry out the same. New Zealand was straining at the leash in the race for Empire prosperity. A Hong Kong message states that there was an impressive ceremony at the Cenotaph this morning attended by local Australian and New Zealand residents.
