URUTI DISTRICT NEWS

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL ITEMS.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Old, Taupiri, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. P. Thomson. _ Miss Gladys Thomson, Auckland, is visiting the district. Misses B. and N. Thomson are the guests of Mrs. W. Sutton. Miss K. Murray, Melbourne, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Murray. Mrs. Adamson, Ormondville, was a visitor here for' the Wedge-Thomson wedding which took place on Wednesday. Miss J. Thomson has returned from a motor trip to Ohakune. Mrs. Walter Reisima has returned to Opunake after a holiday spent with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Alpe. Mr. E. Oxenham is recovering from his recent accident.

Misses Ruth and Mavis Rea are the guests of Mrs. E. A. Jones. A surprise party visited Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Musker on Wednesday. An enjoyable evening was spent. Mrs. Campbell Rigg spent last weekend at Awakino.

A gift evening was tendered to Miss Eva Thomson in the Uruti hall on Monday, when the settlers of the district took the opportunity of manifesting the esteem in which they held Miss Thomson. Almost every family in the district was represented and many of Miss Thomson’s friends from neighbouring districts were present. An enjoyable evening was spent in dancing, and musical items were greatly appreciated by all, particularly nondancers. Songs were sung by Mrs. Campbell Rigg, Mr. D. Lange, Mr. Skuse and Mr. J. Tonkins. Mr. A. Marshall played a violin solo. A vocal and instrumental quartette was rendered by Misses B. and P. Tonkins, Mr. J. Tonkins and Mr. A. Marshall. Accompaniments were played ‘by Miss B. Tonkins and. Mr. R. Murray. A recitation from Mr. Lange brought the item of the evening to a close. Mr. S. S. Butt, on behalf of those present, made eulogistic references to Miss Thomson. He pointed out that Miss ’’Thomson needed no greater assurance of her popularity than was manifested by the number present. Mr. Butt mentioned that Miss Thomson as postmistress had been extremely obliging and. everybody was delighted to know that she would continue to reside in the district after her marriage. On behalf of Miss Thomson Mr. A. Wedge thanked those present for the kindness they had shown her. Musical honours were accorded the guests of the evening. Dancing continued till late into the night.
