MR. L.' J. FURRTE (AMENDED.TEACHERS AND EOONOBITES. “That the headmaster of . the Stratford primary school (Mr. ~L. - J. Furrie) be thanked, and that congratulations be recorded for his spirited defence of the policy of the- New Zealand Educational Institute,. which was attacked by the mayor of Sitratford at the recent householders. meeting at Stratford.”. This motion, the outcome 'of a lengthy discussion' in which ' the attitude of the mhyor (Mr. P. Thomson) was severely criticised, was adopted by a well attended meeting of -the South Taranaki branch of the N.'Z.E.I. at Stratford on Saturday. Mr. L; B. Galbraith presided. The meeting.felt.it unwarranted that ulterior motives should be attributed to the N.Z.E.I. in its. attitude towards proposed .educational economies, and stressed that the organisation stood, and always had -stood, for ..what was best and most valuable'to, the child, life of the. community. , , • ■ , ; . Further business’ was the .matter of remits for the annual conference. Consideration of-the suggested refresher course for teachers •on Saturdays or during the holidays was deferred' until a future..meeting.
Mr. Thomas Tayler, Normanby, was appointed to represent the branch at- the annual conference to be held at Wellington on May 9. . A vote.of thanks was accorded those members of the institute’ who had interviewed members of Parliament regarding certain recommendations- of the. economy commission,' ■ particularly the matters of. closing. grade' O schools, and raising, of school entrance age and the conveyance of children to schools. ■ Mr. 1 J. R.'Nairn, Hawera, has resigned membership after- 35 years’ - active, participation in the affairs of the institute. A .motion was -passed placing on record the ■ branch’s high appreciation of the services rendered by. Mr. Nairn and: wishing him a long and happy retirement..

Following the usual- practice members of the'Stratford Fii’e Brigade assembled at the station yesterday moping .for their Anzac memorial service conducted this year. by. the Rev. G. T. Beale. The service was at its.most 'impressive stage -when 'the superintendent,; 'Mr. L. B. Davis; received .notification, that- the . chimney of; Mr.. J. W. Spence’s residence in-Olivia Street was. burning,furiously.’ Mr. Beale at', bncp.finished his address,’thus allowing-a.couple of men to hasten to. the .fire. • ■' ■ ■' - before the outbreak was. extinguish-ed.-it was necessary to remove an ornamental, mantelpiece. - . The. brigade later attended the general Anzac parade. • ■ ;

THE ANNUAL MEETING' HELD.
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Eltham branch of the Women’s Division of the'Farmers’ Union on Saturday. The balancesheet showed a. satisfactory credit. The report presented by the president, Mrsi J.. Cocker, stated that 11 meetings had been held, all fairly well attended, and a good deal of interest was shown. It would be desirable to see more members at meetings, 'but many found .it difficult to attend as they lived a considerable distance away. The birthday party. was a very pleasant function, many neighbouring branches being, represented. The dressmaking classes were ' .successful and many members took advantage of the instruction.. The exchange of plants and seeds was much appreciated. .Several branches were visited by the president, who found ■members, keen .to carry on the good work. Two new 'branches with a membership of 30 each were formed this year. ... A number of homes were visited and assistance given, where, necessary. Housekeepers had been sent to various . homes and housekeepers’ salaries had been reduced to meet the times and to .enable members to take advantage of the scheme., An • address; by Dr. T- H. A. Valintine was much appreciated. t The book club had received a donation from the Eltham Library. Books and, magazines had been-sent to the : backblocks. A small amount-of money was raised 'by a dance. .The branch assisted with the “pound scheme” for the relief of distress. • Officers elected were: • President,- Mrs. J. Cocker; . vice-presidents, .Mrs. - H. Jordan and Mrs.. Ogle; secretary,• Mrs. E. • Fletcher; treasurer, Mrs. Simpson; librarian, Mrs., White; advisory, member, .Mrs. Fletcher. ■ ■ ■:-■". ....
