FIJI CUTTER OVERDUE
FEARS FOR SAFETY.
FOURTEEN PERSONS ABOARD.
(New Zealand Herald Correspondent.) Suva, April 7.
Considerable anxiety is felt in Suva as to the safety of the auxiliary cutter Tui Vunimacawa, owned by Jang Hing Ldong Company, Limited. She sailed fron* Koro Levu.on the island of Kadata at' 2 p.m. on Tuesday, and has not been heard of since.
The master of the schooner Mary Work reports that when north of Vanuakola he passed oil drums and a quantity of cases of bananas. The sea between here and Kadavu is subject to sudden and fierce squalls, and it is thought possible that the cutter may have been dismasted or that a worse fate has overtaken her.
The cutter is of 2'5 tons, and has a semi-Diesel engine. A crew of nine Fijians was commanded by Captain Paula, a well-known native, who has the reputation of being a good seaman. Four Chinese passengers were also carried and a cargo of 600 cases of bananas. The vessel is insured with the Pacific Insurance Company for £l'soo. This morning the Government despatched the motor-vessel Derek to conduct a search in the locality, and the owners also lent their auxiliary cutter Saintion to assist.
