FIRE IN ABANDONED MINE
TOWNSHIP FEARS EXPLOSION. DENSE VOLUMES OF SMOKE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Sydney, April 25. Fire in abandoned colliery workings beneath the township of Greta, near Newcastle, is causing anxiety. Volumes of smoke issuing from the openings in the * earth have killed vegetation and is affecting the householders’ water supplies. Afany fear an explosion may wreck their homes.
A later message says the fire has become more serious. Flames are now shooting above the ground from another spot some distance from where the smoke was issuing endangering the main northern railway.
