RESPONSE ON POPPY DAY

AT LEAST £450 EXPECTED ADVANCE ON 193 1 SUCCESS IN NORTH TARANAKI. .By last night the remarkable sum of over £4OO had. been reecived in response to the annual Poppy Day appeal in North Taranaki yesterday. With the collection at Inglewood, which is still to be made, and many more collections still to come from country districts, it is expected the sum collected will be well over £450. In spite of the pinch of the times the total already exceeds that of the £403 in hand by Anzac Day last year. The sum of £57 7s 4d had been received from the country districts yesterday and there were still returns to come from 42 blocks in the country. Waitara had contributed £25, Opunake had £lO in hand and more to come and Inglewood is to hold its Poppy Day to-day. Apart from collections in the town and country the sum already received includes £3l 13s 9d raised from the stall in charge of Mrs. D. Blackley, the donation of £5O from the New Plymouth Savings Bank, £l5 raised by a competition conducted by Mrs. Jack Stevenson, donations of £1 Is from the New Plymouth Friendly Societies, £1 from Mrs. R. Brewster and 10s. from Dr. E. A. Walker and other donations. The appeal, made yesterday, which was under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, was organised by Mrs. R. H. Quilliam, who was assisted by members of the Taranaki W omen s Club. The rooms of the club were used as the New Plymouth headquarters. Large bands of helpers assisted in the various towns and districts.

At the Women’s Club rooms Mrs. Quilliam was assisted by Mesdames T. P. Anderson, G. E. Cartwright and A. Humphries. Mrs. F. L. Hartnell, assisted by Mrs. I. M. Butchart and Mrs. A. R. Thompson, served tea to the helpers. The cash takings were handled by Messrs. W. Brodie and A. McHardy, asssted by Mrs. D. le C, Morgan, Mrs. C. S. Mayer and Miss M. Carr. Crockery for the use of the workers was lent by Mrs. Johnson, of the Chequers. The rooms were decorated with scarlet flowers by Mrs. W. C. 'Weston. Mrs. W. D. Graham provided lunch for a number of the street helpers. ■SUCCESS OF STREET STALL. In addition to the house-to-house collection and the sale of poppies in the streets a stall was conducted in Devon Street and competitions were organised. A generous response was made in foodstuffs for the shop, especially from the country districts. Even two small schools, Mimi and Pungarehu, sent contributions. Mrs. Blackley was in charge of the stall and was assisted by Mesdames S. F. Burgess, G. Neal, S. B. Williams, E. B. Ellerm, J. Brash, J. R. Sceats, J. A. McQueen and Mr. Mac Robertson. Competitions were conducted for cakes donated by Mesdames J. Flannagan and W. C. Weston, and a dinner donated by Mrs. Blackley. A competition conducted by Mrs. Knight, Tataraimaka, was won by Mrs. Fred Morris (Oakura). Afternoon tea and tea were provided for the helpers by the Mon Desir. Particularly good results were obtained'this year in the country districts. These were mapped out in blocks to prevent overlapping, and personal visits were made to each block beforehand by Mrs. Quilliam to arrange for the collections. The consequence was that each district was comprehensively covered and the receipts from many of the districts were doubled and even trebled. Another consequence was that the town collection was somewhat smaller because the majority of country visitors had already been canvassed at their own homes. The sums received yesterday from those of the country districts which had completed their collections were: Miss Westwood, Mokau, £1; Mrs. H. Foreman, Tikorangi, £5 5s 6d; Miss Corney, Albert Road dstrict, £1 2s 6d; Mr. N. Gibson, Kaimiro, £2 ss; Mrs. F. Baker, Hurworth, £2 Ils; Miss Morton, Egmont Village, £3 (and 10s for competition fund.) 3 ; Miss Lottie Sampson, Hillsborough, £3; Mrs. Jordan, Mangorei, £1 16s 6d; Miss M. Giddy, Tarurutangi, £2 2s; Mrs. Bell, Oakura, £1 2s; Mrs. J. F. Phillips, Waitoitoi, £1 3s; Mrs. W. Hall, Huirangi, £2 10s; Mrs. Knight, Tataraimaka, £3 2s 6d; Mrs. Wellington, _ Lepperton, £3 17s; Miss Limmer, Brixton, £3 10s; Mrs. Middleton, Waitara, £25 4s; Mrs. N. H. Murray, Bell Block, £4 3s? , COLLECTIONS IN THE CITIES. LARGE SUMS IN PROSPECT. The Poppy Day appeal in Wellington city and suburbs is expected to realise £IOQO, says a Press Association message. About £625 was realised in the city area. A Christchurch message says the sale of poppies in that city and suburbs resulted in the collection of £971. The return is incomplete and it is expected that last year’s total of nearly £l5OO will be exceeded.
