HAWERA ITEMS

Miss Nancy Duckworth, who has been spending a few weeks at Napier with friends, returned home on Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Hockin, Feilding, spent a day or two in Hawera early in the week on their way through to Auckland.

Mrs. Barak, Wellington, has been Mrs. F. W. Sutton’s guest for the week.

Mrs. Reid, Wellington, has been the guest of Mrs. Stott.

Mrs. Swan, Auckland", i-s spending the week-end with Mrs. H. R. Kemp.

Miss Betty Ryan ha’s returned from a few weeks’ holiday in Wellington.

Mrs. Baker, who has been the guest of Mrs. W. A. Spragg, has returned to Kaihu.

Sister G. Thomson, Morrinsville, formerly of the Hawera Hospital, visited Hawera during the week as the guest of Mrs. T. J. Allan.

Mrs. Leigh Tonks gave a jolly little birthday party on Saturday in honoui of her small son Arthur.

On Friday afternoon of last week Mrs. W. 0. Williams entertained a few friends at tea, those present being Mrs. A. Hunter, Mrs. Arthur Coleman and Miss K. Coleman, Mesdames Woodward, Collins, 0. J. Hawken (Waverley), Dew Caplen and H. Me William.

Mrs. J. B. Murdoch was hostess at tea on Wednesday afternoon, when Mesdames Burgess, W. G. Strange, A. '. Wills, G. H. Buckeridge, H. VA button, J. S. Young, and Misses Cameron and M. Sutton were among those entertained.

The first evening of the Bridge Circle of the Women’s Club was held last week, when three tables were in play on Thursday evening. This week three tables met on Thursday afternoon, among the players being Mesdames W. Jobson, W. Janson, Payne, J. B. Murdoch, J. Campbell, A. E. Stevens, W. Syme, W. MdL’Dowie, Beck, Tennent and Misses McDonald and M. Sutton.

Mrs. H. R. Kemp was hostess at tea on Friday afternoon of last week, when among those entertained were Mesdames J. G. Bayley, Chisholm, H. Whitehead, Swan (Auckland), Tocker, Ashwell, W. M. Winks, Arnold Thomson, I. H. McWilliams and Rowe. Mrs. Kemp wore a smart wine-coloured afternoon frock.

The silver wedding of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Spragg, Princes Street extension, Hawera, and the birthday of Mis. Sprang were celebrated recently at their residence. Mrs. Spragg received hei guests wearing a frock of black georgette and lace. A presentation of a silver-mounted cut-glass salad service was made by Mr. M- R. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Spragg were also entertained in the meeting house by the Natives at Taiporohenui, Mr. Scotty Panenui presenting them with a silver-mounted pickle-jar. The latter function was largely attended.

Mrs. W. J. Bright was hostess at tea on Wednesday afternoon, when she received her guests attired in a smait toilette of bottle green figured crepe de chine. Blue hydrangeas, pink-toned dahlias and pretty autumn foliage were tastefully arranged in the drawing room. Those entertained were Mr". and Miss Dingle, Mrs. Tennent, Mrs. Arthur Coleman and Miss Kitty Coleman, Mrs. W. 0. Williams, Mrs. Woodward and Mre. D. G. Smart.

The newly-formed Discussion Circle held its first evening at the Women’s Olub on Monday, Miss Glenn presiding. “China” was the subject chosen, and following a few selected readings on the subject Mrs. O’Callaghan gave an interesting talk on experiences during her; visit to the Old Country. Others who selected and read paragraphs and chapters of interest from various works and papers on the topic of discussion were Mrs. J. S. Young, Miss May Burgess, Miss C. Reilly and Mrs. B. 0. Bennett. A most pleasurable evening closed with supper. Among those present were Mesdames A. K. North, W. Syme, A. Thomson, J. Campbell, Roberts, Adams, Rice, W. Janson, Tennent, T. McKenzie, and Misses Glenn, D. Corrigan and Jenkin.

A large number of members assembled at the large reception room at the Women’s Club on Tuesday afternoon to witness a demonstration of home weaving by Mrs. Barak, Wellington. The president, Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan, welcomed Mrs. Barak and introduced hei. The demonstrator did not omit one point of interest, and those present were not only shown the weaving process itself, but also the setting up of the loom, threadings, variation of weave, etc., and several who wished were also given the opportunity of trying the art themselves under Mrs. Barak’s guidance. Several samples of materials woven on the loom were displayed, and altogether a most interesting afternoon was spent. Among those present were Mesdames McL’Dowie, Woodward, W. Janson, H. Whitehead, L. J. Bull, Miss Caplen, Mesdames F. W. Sutton, Jobson, W. Duckworth, Chisholm, H. H. Bramwell, Duncan, Naughton (Wellington), B. C. Bennett, A. Thomson, Beck, F. W. Horner, Rowe, R. H. Leece, H. R. Kemp, W. G. Strange, A. E. Stevens, J. Campbell, W. Syme, R. R. Henderson, A. Hunter, Rice, J. 8. Young, Owens, Tennent, W. J. Bright, B. McCarthy, Crocker, Fyson, Stott, Reid (Wellington), and Misses D. Corrigan, B. Young, HayMacKenzie, M. Black, Kissling, Buchanan (2), B. Ryan.

HAWERA WOMEN’S DIVISION.

SOCIAL AFTERNOON HELD. A social afternoon was held at the Carlton Tea. Rooms, Hawera, on Thursday, when about 40 members were present. There was also present as a guest Mrs. W. Moffatt, Palmerston North, Songs were rendered by Mrs. Kendall and recitations by Mrs. ,J. C. Robb. Great interest was displayed in a patchwork cushion, a wool quilt and a gardening apron made from a sugar bag, exhibited by Mrs. W.. E. Carter. It was reported that preparations for the wool display at the next Hawera Winter Show were well in hand. A schedule had been drawn up and would be obtainable from branch secretaries.

One full set of baby’s clothes had been sent to t'he public hospital, and a quantity of clothing had been received at the sewing depot. Invitations were received from the Hawera Red Cross Society to a farewell social at Hawera on May 4 to Sister Ingles, and from the Opunake branch to its third birthday tea on May 6,
