TIKORANGI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

SECOND BIRTHDAY PARTY. The calm sunny afternoon on Tuesday and an excellent attendance of members and guests combined to make the second birthday party of the Tikorangi Women’s Institute the most successful afternoon yet held. Over a hundred people were present at the hall, nearly all the members and a large number of local visitors attending as well as visitors from Urenui, Inglewood, Egmont Village, Waitara and Tarurutangi. There was also present Mrs. C. Matthews, who belongs to the Richmond Institute in Natal, South Africa, and who is visiting New Zealand. The afternoon’s fun began with a paper-tearing competition, the animal to be torn 'being a pig. The competition, . which caused a great deal of amusement, was won by Mrs. H. A. Foreman, the judges having a hard task in sorting and judging the ninety-odd entries. “Mother Machree” was sung by Mi's. Bert Foreman and was encored. “Young Fellow M’Lad” was recited by Miss I. Foreman. There followed a one-act farce entitled “Hunt Lizzie’s ■Friend,” played by eight members, Mrs. L. Garten, Miss N. Morey, Mrs. A. Whitehead, Mrs. R. Morey, Mrs. Ritchie, Miss N. Langeley, Mrs. R. Jury and Mrs. R. Sarten. Afternoon tea was served in the hall supper room, the tables being decorated with yellow and bronze chrysanthemums. On the centre table was the huge birthday cake made by an institute member, Mrs. Limmer, and beautifully iced by another member, Mrs. H. Cole. The cake was iced in yellow and white. The two candles were lit by the president and burned brightly until the first slice was cut. Mrs. Morey thanked Mrs. Lankshear, New Plymouth, for decorating the room. Replies to the welcome were made by Mrs. Kaye (Inglewood), and Mrs., Phillips (Urenui Women’s Division). A large table in one corner of the hall was loaded with arts and crafts of the members, also work done in bygone days. The afternoon was brought to an end with the game “musical parcels,” which was won by Mrs. Roy Jury. The top tier of the birthday cake, which was not cut, was won by Baby Eunice Whitehead.
