WORK FOR PATEA SCHOOL, At the close of the final meeting of the Patea School Committee for the year, opportunity was taken by the chairman, Air. R. E: Moore, to pay tribute to the work of the secretary, the Rev. C. Aker, who leaves shortly on transfer to Norsewood. Air. Aker had acted as secretary for three years and had shouldered most of the chairman’s work as well, said Air. Moore. He had ■ put in untold time on school work, and the present state of the grounds was largely due to his efforts. Mr. R. Mays endorsed the chairman’s remarks. He resided opposite the school gates and he probably knew better than anyone the hours that Mr. Aker had put in around the school grounds and clinic, he said. Mr. Armstrong (head teacher), on behalf of the staff thanked Mr. Aker for his work in the interests of the school and the children.

The chairman, on behalf of the committee, handed Mr. Aker 1 a leather brief bag as a token of their esteem and. an expression of their good wishes. Mr. Aker said it had been a pleasure to act with them on the committee. He had been> serving on school committees for a number of years. The work he had done had been made possible only by the co-operation of the staff and the committee. IJis treatment by the Wanganui Education Board left nothing to be desired and the board’s promptitude in business’ matters made the work a pleasure. GENERAL ITEMS. Welcome rain fell in South Taranaki on Monday night. Light showers fell in Hawera early in the evening, but about 11 p.m. a south wind rose and heavy rain fell for some hours, the recorded amount being .82 inch —more than for the whole of March. About .512 inch fell at Wanganui, and the coastal area between Hawera and that city must have benefited considerably. At the same time the rain has come almost too late to materially affect dairy production for the remainder of the season.

?lie St. John’s Gymnasium Club, which has done much good work for the young men of the town in past years, opened its 1932 season in Hawera at St. John’s Hall on Monday night. About 14 members attended and, under the supervision and training of Mr. V. Gerrand, a good programme of development work was run through. The exercises were carried out to the music of Mr. Herbert Webb. Tentative arrangements are being made for classes of juniors under Messrs. Watte and Clapham. The opening Makamara euchre and dance party was held on Friday night. There was a very good attendance of over 60. Prizes were won by Mrs. Milham and Mr. N. Candy. “They are as alike as two peas out of one pod,” said a speaker at the public meeting in Hawera on Monday when it was pointed out to him that he had made the not infrequent error of confusing Mr. C. D. Dickie with his brother, Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. Exports through the port of Patea for February last, with the figures for February, 1931, in parentheses, were 1924 tons (1571 tons) of a value of £1191,009 ( £174,600). Imports for February were 307 tons (261 tons). “The bar is not suitable for negotiating in open boats, especially when manned by inexperienced boatmen, as conditions sometimes change from good to bad in ten minutes,” stated the harbourmaster (Captain W. E. Barnes) in reporting to the Patea Harbour Board at yesterday’s meeting upon the drowning fatality at the entrance on March 13. Members of the board expressed regret at the accident. The Hawera municipal baths will close for the season on Saturday and the custodian (Mr. J. Dowdle) stated yesterday that ' the receipts from season tickets were greater than in other years. Since last February 234 children had been taught to swim. The cold snap which set in on Monday affected attendances to a large extent, and only the very keen swimmers ventured in yesterday. “The finances of the board are in a very healthy state,” said Mr. A. T. Christensen at yesterday’s meeting of the Patea Harbour Board when submitting a statement of receipts and expenditure for the six months ending March 31 last. Receipts totalled £2863 as compared with £2157 for the corresponding period of last year, an increase of £706, due principally to increased export trade, excellent weather conditions having faciliated shipping. Fairly heavy expenditure accounted for an incease of £450 as compared with the same period of last year, the figures, being £2503 and £2057 respectively. The following will represent the Opunake Bowling Club against Hawera Park at Hawera to-day: McCrone, Dalrymple, Petitt, Burton (s); Tobeck, Des Forges, Walker, Gunson (s); D. Peat, Johnston, Fake, Julian (s); R. Peat, Judson, Hickey, Wilson (s); Jenkin, Callaghan, Moron, Hammond (s). The Opunake Bowling Club representatives played creditably in the pairs tournament at Cambridge at Easter. F. Julian and C. H. Marcroft beat Easter and Dix (Cambridge) in the semi-final and defeated the McFarlanes (Ngaruwahia) by 17 to 15 in the final.
