HAWERA TOURNAMENT PLAY.

Play in the tournament arranged by the Hawera Croquet Club started in cold and overcast weather at the club s lawns yesterday, and a number of matches was concluded. This tournament, which is open to lady players only, ia an innovation as far as the Hawera Club*, is concerned, and some idea of its popularity can be gained from the fact that' the entries total 74 and a ’ lclu j le visitors from Waitara, Stratford, Eltham, ’ Kaponga, Patea and the Paris. INTERMEDIATE SINGLES. Second Round: Airs. Hillock beat Mrs. Murdoch 26—6. TE NGUTU GOLF CLUB. PREPARATION OF COURSE. Matapu and Okaiawa golf enthusiasts have been busy preparing a course on Messrs. Harris Bros.’ property on the Ahipaipa Road. A meeting has been held and the following officers elected: President, Mr. E. Meuli; vice-presidents; Messrs. 0. Robertson and J. C. Barclay; dub captain, Mr. W. H. Stevenson; secretary and treasurer, Air. R. C. Treweek; executive, Messrs. Preece junr., C. Evetts and N. G. Luxton. Appreciation of Messrs. Harris Bros.’ generosity in offering their property for the club’s use was expressed and the club has been greatly assisted by the services given at no little inconvenience by Mr. W. O’Callaghan in planning the links and giving advice, for which a hearty vote of appreciation was accordad him. Working bees have been organised through the holidays and good progress has been made with the greens, Already a number have visited the links and . are delighted with the. course and it® surroundings. The club promises to be a great success and hopes are entertained for an early opening day. hawera municipal band. ' PREPARATION FOR CONTEST. The citizens’ committee of the Hawera Afunicipal Band met on Monday night, Mr. E. Dixon presiding. In his report the conductor (Air. H. C. A. Fox) stated that the band had been on parade on 28 occasions during Alarch. Preparations for the Taranaki contest were well in hand. The selection for the senior band was “Beethoven’s Works.” The auxiliary band was making good progress and, if private transport could be arranged, it was hoped to compete at the district contest, as the experience Would be invaluable. Attendance ’ at rehearsals had been good and the membership was well maintained. Votes of thanks were accorded Airs. E. Hawkins for the gift of four chairs, and the Hawera Pipe Band for i._ generous action in allowing the collection taken at the park display on Sunday to go. to the contest fund.
ALTON BRANCH W.D.F.U.
OFFICERS FOR YEAR ELECTED.
There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Alton branch, on Tuesday. Mrs. W. A. Tayler presided.
The report stated that although only in existence since August 19, the branch had flourished both socially and financially. It had held six well attended meetings. The membership now stood *t 3S, an improvement of 11. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £8 16s 9d. During the year Mrs. Carter gave an interesting. address on W.D.F.U. work and also demonstration .on matmaking with silk stockings. Other- demonstrations were given by Miss Burnand on raffia work and Mr. F. Bone on wool rug making and wool embroidery wbrkJ A successful hard-up social and * well-attended picnic were held. The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs. W. E.. Tayler; vice-pre-sidents, MesdamesH. J. Hall, H. Hodge and'A. J. Gibbs;'secretary, Mrs. R. E. Nicholson; treasurer. Miss A. Burnand; social committee, Mesdames A. Illingworth, L. Hunt, F. Nickel and P. W. Tong; advisory members, Mesdaines A. M. Lord and G. Burnand. ALTON FARMERS’ UNION. annual meeting held. Officers elected at the-annual meeting of the Alton, branch of the Farmers’ Union last night were: President, H. Hodge; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. Hunt, P Tong and 0. J. Oakley; executive, Messrs. R. Nicholson, H. Sutherland, F. Nidkel A. Ward, K. Shape, R. Watts, 8. Adlam, J. Smitheram, E. Hurley, ■R. Schwass, C. Wills and G. Scown; secretary, Mr. W. A. Taylor (re-elected); auditor, Mr. Proffitt. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £2 2s. It was decided to hold a ball on July 96.
