Hon. J. Gr. Coates claimed that income-taxpayers could not alone bear the burden being distributed by the shilling wages tax. Mr. Coates claimed that unemployed women were being assisted. Members criticised the Government’s lack of boldness and A J. Connolly advanced a land scheme under which he asserted men could become practically self-supporting at a cost of £2O a year. Labour’s attack on the Bill was opened by Mr. W. E. Parry. It was urged that Mr. Coates was wrong in saying the saturation point had been reached in the absorption of men by local manufacturing industries.
