TRAINING AT ELLERSLIE

SOME FAST TIMES RECORDED

GALLOPS ON A SLIPPERY TRACK. LIGHT THROWN UPON FORM. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, March -24. Heavy rain fell early this morning and continued until track work was commenced at Ellerslie, when it cleared, and conditions remained fine till the breakfast interval, after which there was one' heavy shower. Consequently the ground was inclined to be cut up a little, but despite the fact some good times were recorded. Practically all the fast work was done on the course proper, on which the poles were 35ft. out from the rails. No. 3 grass track and the hurdle arid steeplechase courses were also in use.

Among the best efforts of the morning were those registered by Midinette, Pomp, Awarere, Marechai,, Golden Wings, Puriri Park, Lady Quex, Hampton Park, Sunny Sky, Manawhenua and .Grand Spirit. On the course proper the first to work were Midinette and Pomp, who ran their first two furlongs in 24 4-5 and completed five furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Sir Mond was given an easy task, sprinting home down the straight. Star Stranger was not doing his best while traversing seven furlongs in 1.40 1-5. This gelding is looking very bright and healthy. Golden Wings had a lot of pace on when he jumped off at the five furlongs post, running his first two furlongs in 24 2-ssec. and completing the task in 1.5 4-5. He eased up over the last furlong and could have done a lot better. He j appears, to be in good order for his-' race in the Easter Handicap on Saturday, but so far no rider has been engaged for him. r j , After breakfast Puriri Park and 'Manawhenua were the first out, jumping off together at the seven furlpng post. They ran their first two furlongs in 25sec., three in 37 1-5, four in 49 4-5, and 'the full distance in 1.32. Puriri Park was going the better of the pair at the finish. Full Measure (Chaplin) and Lucess (Rennie) were sent over four hurdles, the former beating his companion by over 50 yards. Lucess went on and jumped two more fences, but was not bustled owing to the slippery nature of the : ground. Russet Moor (Burgess) and Claremore (L. Dulieu) gave a good display over four hurdles. King’s Counsel (A. McDonald), Nassock (Turner) and Dominican (Craddock) were companions over a round of the steeplechase course, and completed their task safely. King’s Counsel jumped impressively, and Nassock also pleased for a beginner. Master Lu (Gilmer), Copey (Dunn), Town Beauty (H. Dulieu) and Russet Moor (Burgess) set off over a round of the steeplechase course. They each 'jumped the fences on the flat in good style, Russet Moor being pulled up along the back, while Master Du and Town Beauty continued on the course proper, Copey going over the hill and the fences on the flat alone. They all jumped well, particularly Copey, and Master Lu and Russet Moor jumped rather extravagantly. Others to work were Peter Jackson, Hunting Cry, Chrysology, and Great Star.
