BIBLE CLASS CAMP

METHODISTS AT STRATFORD. A camp for members of Hie Methodist Young Men’s Bible Classes is being held at the showgrounds, Stratford, during Easter and is being attended by a large number in which most districts of Taranaki are represented. The camp commenced on Thursday night under the leadership of the Rev. T. Skuse, Stratford, assisted by members of the Stratford and Wharehuia classes.

The chief event of yesterday morning was a service conducted by the Rev. E. S. Emmitt, Hawera. In the afternoon Mr. Emmitt gave an address on the League of Nations. In the evening a demonstration on mountaineering was given by Mr. A. W. White, Stratford. GENERAL ITEMS. When Mr. F. J. Leonard’s home, Cheal Road, Pukengahu, was completely burned on Wednesday he lost a valuable collection of antiques, books and some coins, one of which dating from the reign of Charles I. was deemed to be worth a large sum. The house was insured for only £3OO and the contents for £200., Fire on Wednesday night destroyed an eight-roomed house at Huiroa occupied by Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Williams and owned by Mr. J. Darragh, Feilding. Sales in Taranaki for the “Lucky Strike” art union conducted in aid of the Stratford, Auckland and Winton A. and P. Associations constituted a record for the six weeks’ period. Stratford has the credit of the highest sales with New Plymouth next. The box of chocolates offered for competition by the Stratford Pliinket Society was won by Mrs. H. Robertson, Midhirst.

Entries for the Midhirst sports on Thursday close ‘ definitely to-day. Th® large and varied assortment of events provides a field in which any athlete can compete.

At a representative meeting of combined public servants held in the C.E.M.S. Club, Eltham, on- Wednesday the following resolution was carried:— ■■ “This meeting protests against a further 10 per cent, cut until such time as the cost of living is proportionately reduced and equality of sacrifice by ail sections of the community brought about.” The annual contest for the Crabtree Shield will be held at Eltham on Monday at 2 p.m. There will be competing teams from Waitara, Stratford, Eltham, Hawera and Patea. The Eltham brigade is the present holder, of the trophy. The winners will also receive £2 2s.
