The defendants peladed privilege as a justification. Their counsel contended that they never said that Chapman doped the horse. > Evidence was given that plaintiff had offered £5OO reward, and had employed a private detective to discover the doper, but had failed to locate him. The jury found that the words meant that Chapman was a party to the doping, and a verdict was given for £13,000 damages against the stewards ; and. Weatherbys, and a further £3OOO damages against all the defendants.
