SPORTS DAY AT TOKAORA

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION HELD.

KEEN COMPETITION DISPLAYED. Fine weather favoured the Tokaora sports committee for its annual gala day and sports meeting on Mr. V. Mills’ property yesterday. From every point of view the gathering was most successful. Residents of the district, supplemented by visitors from Hawera and other districts, attended in considerable numbers and spent a very enjoyable day. A comprehensive programme of athletic, horse, novelty, Highland dancing and children’s event, carried through in an expeditious manner, engaged the interest of spectators throughout the day. Competition was keen in all events, some exciting finishes being witnessed. The officials had made very thorough preparations for the conduct of the meeting, a great deal of work devolving upon the executive, which consisted of Messrs. S. Thrush (chairman), J. Freyne and J. V. McMahon (joint secretaries), T. Bollond, A. Taplin, W. Standish, F. Stewart, L. Barr, H. V. Ward and T. Wakelin. An energetic ladies’ committee conducted a refreshment booth during the day, the members being Mesdames S. Thrush, S. F. Wills, L. Atkinson, F. Stewart, E. Jennings, J. V. McMahon, Misses M. Wakelin, M. Bollond, J. Jennings, G. Bennett and P. Ford. The Hawera Highland Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major J. B; Henson, played a number of selections, and Highland piping and dancing events, superintended by the president of the band, Mr. J. B. Laurenson, were held, including, an exhibition of dancing by Miss Doreen Nairn and pupils. A large number of children’s races were conducted by Messrs. W. J. Meyer and N. H. Wren. At a euchre party and dance in the evening there was a large attendance. Details are:—50 yards ladies’ race, amateur: Miss P. Bollond 7, Miss B. Hosie 2.
