HAWERA FOOTBALL CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. FREE HAND IN SCRUM QUESTION. The annual meeting of the Hawera Football Club last night gave delegates to the Taranaki Rugby Union a free hand in the 3 —2—3 . scrum question.

The report complimented members on their . performances. . Six. teams were nominated for the Taranaki Rugby competition —one senior, two third and two fourth grade teams. One of the thirds and one of the fourths were teams from the Hawera High School. The only junior team to achieve any success was the third grade team, which won its way to the play-off in the division, losing by a small margin to Opunake, which went on and won the grade championship. The senior team came fourth in the southern division and the junior team did remarkably well and came third in the group. The fourth grade for a new team did remarkably well and came third in the group. The High School thirds and fourths came second and third in their respective groups. With the exception of the thirds the teams did not give fitness the consideration that was needed, and it was hoped that for the 1932 season there would be a change. The junior team returned the visit of the Johnsonville Club and had to admit defeat. Several players gained representative honours.

The club was in a good financial position with an excess of assets over liabilities of £59 4s 2d. Once again the honorary members had kept the club “on side.” The donations were more than the previous season, but the biggest loss was in the receipts of subscriptions from players. Only £8 17s 4d was received as against £lB Us the previous season. It was admitted that several players were out of employment, but the majority were able to pay and help the club. The refunds from the Taranaki Rugby Union were very disappointing, showing a drop of £7 Us 9d, with a small balance still to come. ’ A seven-a-side tournament was held for the Mokoia settlers’ shield, which was won by the Athletic Club, and the tournament showed a good profit of £6 5s 9d. By careful. management the club was almost able to make the season pay for itself. ■ Travelling expenses alone amounted to £43 4s 6d.

The committee was keenly conscious of .the support accorded by many enthusiastic supporters, especially those who had made donations, the Referees’ Association, the Press and the Red Cross Society for attention to injured players. Mr. B. C. Bennett had donated, a medal for the most improved junior forward, and this had been awarded to Jack Rangiwahia. The thanks of the club were offered to the following, who gave their services as coaches: Seniors, Messrs. Hunter and Patterson; juniors, Mr. Cropp; thirds, Mr. Thompson; fourths, Mr. Grant. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. A. Hunter; president, Mr. J. Rowe; vice-presidents, Mrs. G. H. Gibson, Sergeant Henry and Mr. E. A. Pacey; secretary, Mr. R. G. Hawke; treasurer, Mr. R. Good; auditor, Air. R. F. Page; committee, Messrs. B. Rawcliff e, °L. V. Carmine, V. Sanson, J. France, J. Goodwin, A. Clement, C. Hammond, N. Grant, W. Cropp, C. Dahl, A. Henry and W. W. Thomas; delegates to Rugby ■ Union, Messrs. Rowe, Carmine and J. E. Campbell; dressing shed committee, Messrs. J• France and A. Henry; gymnasium representative, Sergeant Henry; club captiin, Mr. M. Patterson.
