LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN

MEETING AND SMOKE CONCERT.

APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS.

Over 50 Legionaries of the M Squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen attended the annual meeting and smoke concert at Hawera last night, Captain L. V. Powell, 0.C., presiding. The Ohawe, Eltham, Kaponga and Waverley troops were represented. Visitors from other squadrons included Captain Hardy and Lieutenant Curran (Wanganui). The report reviewed a successful working and. financial year, the troop rolls being high and a credit of £4 16 s 9d being shown on the squadron bal-ance-sheet., The congratulations of the squadron were extended to Colonel Vickridge upon his promotion to Commandant Frontiersmen, N.Z. Division. Officers elected were: O.C. Squadron, Captain L. V. Powell; adjutant, Lieut. C. Curtis; troop leaders, Lieutenants Langley (Ohawe), Scott (Kaponga), Boyer (Waverley) and Carncross (Eltham)'; regimental sergeant-major, A. Mather; staff major, J. Findlater. Captain Powell and the adjutant, Lieutenant Curtis, were appointed the squadron’s delegates to the annual conference.

HAWERA HOCKEY CLUB.

BIG INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP.

A sound increase in the membership of the, Hawera Hockey Club is shown in the report to be presented to the annual meeting to-night. In 1930 there were 32 financial members and last year 47. The club entered two senior and two junior teams in the competitions. Oriental did remarkably well, winning the southern division with an unbeaten record, but lost to Kaponga in the final for the Taranaki championship. In the fiv'e-a-side June 3 tournament the club was represented by three senior and three junior teams. The Kaponga Club is congratulated on winning both the Taranaki championship and the . June 3 tournament. The Bennett and Sutton Cup, which is competed for by seven-a-side" South Taranaki teams, 1 was won •by. Oriental after a very keenly fought competition.' (' The following members gained representative honours: J. Watson, G. Moloney, T. Percy, R. Keheiy, D. Duncan, M. Thompson and A. Ryan of the seniors, and G. Hamilton of the juniors. Annual matches for the Hawanga ■Shield were played as. usual : against Wanganui Old Boys. Hawera completely turned the tables on Old Boys, winning both at Wanganui and Hawera. At the request of the Patea Jubilee Committee an exhibitioA game was played during the jubilee. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed. On two occasions the club played friendly games at Tokaora against the newly-formed club. It was hoped Tokaora woulo. be represented. by a, team in the competition this season. At the end o. last season Alhambra and Oriental played a game for a dinner, the result being a draw. Hawera was unfortunate in .losing-a valuable playing member and a great worker for the club in Mr. G. Butler, who left during the year. The enjoyed a most successful year both financially and socially. Four profitable dances wer held, much of the success being due to the untiring efforts of Mesdames Adams and Evans and the social committee.

PATEA VICTOR INDUCTED.

REV. W. H. WALTON WELCOMED.

The Rev. J. R. Young, archdeacondesignate, officiated in the absence of the Bishop of Wellington at the induction of the Rev. W. H. Walton to the charge of the Patea parochial district. The service was followed by a social evening at the Sunday school building where expressions of welcome were made on be- s half of the parishioners. A welcome was extended by Mr. Young on behalf of the archdeaconry. Co-op'eration with the new vicar by the parish , was urged without which success was not possible. Appreciation of the hearty welcome extended him was expressed by Mr. Walton, who hoped that the success that had attended his efforts at Foxton would be repeated at Patea. McLEOD CUP CROQUET. PATEA PLAYS WANGANUI. Week-end croquet games at Wanganui included the Patea v. Wanganui match for- the McLeod Cup, doubles and handicap singles being played. Each team won three matches. The day’s card, P&tea players named first, reads: Gibbs (scr) lost to Mrs. Jarvie (scr) 6—26, Mrs. Masters (14) beat Mrs. Skeet (2) 26a-15, Mrs. Glenny (3J) beat Mrs. Egan (4-J) 26—21, Mrs. Gibbs (5) lost to Mrs. Bassett (3>J) 4—26; Gibbs and Mrs. Masters beat Mesdames Jarvie and Skeet223,6 —3, Mesdames Glenny and Gibbs lost to Mesdames Egan and Faulkner.

“MICKEY MOUSE” TO-NIGHT.

HAWERA CHILDREN ON STAGE.

To-night at the Hawera Opeta House the members of the Opera House Movie Club will present their pantomime “Mickey Mouse,” which will be followed by 'the British talkie “Tilly of Bloomsbury.” Patrons can. rest assured that the entertainment will be of the best. 1 ... . The children comprising the Movie Club have entered into the scheme of a pantomime with great zest, and rehearsals have been carried out for weeks 1 under the supervision of the director, Mr. J. H. Horton. With beautiful costumes, scenery and lighting effects, the production will be one to remember. Mr. T. C. Hobbs junr. is in charge of the lighting, Mr. F. Ollerenshaw is musical director, and Miss Peggy Wylds is responsible for the clever ballets. A fairy story is woven round Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and special novelty numbers that have been incorporated are certain to appeal to the adult members of the audience, while the ingenuous acting of the juveniles will charm them.

The principal characters are: Joan Anderson (Minnie Mouse), Cliff Horsburgh (Mickey Mouse), Merle Miles (Witch), June Dalgetty (Queen), Cedric Whittington (Oswald the Rabbit), Joan Anderson, Margaret Duffill and Cushla Wylds (three gnomes). Specialty numbers are provided by the ballet and Misses Truda Beechey, Doris Gilmore and Joyce Goodwin. The performance will be repeated tomorrow night.
