Tn the House of Commons Major Lloyd George (Liberal), supporting an amendment to limit the operation of the wheat quota for five years, said that the sub sidy payable was equal to the whole labour cost of the existing wheat aiea, plus the contemplated additional 400,000 acres expected to be devoted to wheat “We could buy all the additional wheat produceable, pay the necessary additional 13,000 employees £lOO a year each, and still spend £2,000,000 less than the proposed subsidy will cost, he said. 1 Sir John Gilmour, Minister of Agriculture, said the Government’s plan was to give wheat farmers a certain three years’ run, when circumstances would be reviewed. , Sir Samuel Chapman (Conservative) said that 18 months ago, as an expenment, he planted wheat four inches apart, like potatoes. These produceci 28 to 30 ears each of grain seed, witn ’66 grains to each ear. There was no reason why they should not produce 80 to 90 bushels to the acre. The amendment was rejected by cut votes to 47.
