THE “DOUBLE” AT FEILDING

GRAND JURY AND SOUCHONG WELL GOOD FIELD IN THE BIG RACE,

(By

"Hurry On.”)

The good stake offered by the Feilding Jockey Club for Saturday’s big race, the Manchester Handicap, has drawn the good field of thirteen, and it looks like being a great contest. Arrow Lad, with 9.2, will be carrying No. 1 ' saddle-cloth, and his racing at Trentham should have done him a lot of good. He has gone some of his best races on the Feilding track. Grand Jury keeps on winning, and his third at Trentham on Saturday was a good trial for a race like this. He is sure to go well. Habit is staying on a lot better at present, but would require to be at her best to win. High Falutin’ went well in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham and he has a handy weight. King Colossus has his connections very puzzled, but he won at Feilding in the spring and may make amends on Saturday.

'.Esteem's third in the St. Leger on Thursday last would point to his having a great chance, but he is not an easy horse to ride. Shrewd is as honest as they are made, and a repetition of his Wanganui form, when he was most unlucky not to heat Grand Jury the second day, would make him very dangerous. Malahat won at Napier and has a habit of« turning up when least expected by the public. Korokio has also paid up for th© open sprint and as the company there is much weaker and she has not had a race for some time, this sprint will probably be her mission. Gold Dawn is sure to have been improved by her race at Opunake, and she will appreciate the drop in weight. The small course will also be in her favour. Calamine has not run a bad race for a.long time and her tun: cannot be far off. She was second in the

Manchester Handicap last year and may go one better this time. Mount Shannon and Billion make little appeal. The race is very open, but Grand Jury and Shrewd among those higher up the list and Gold Dawn and Calamine among the lightweights, should be prominent at the finish. /

The sprint event, the Mangaone Handicap, has only seven acceptors. Consent With 9.9 heads the list, and good horse that he is, this is a solid, impost. Aston appears to have lost form, but may make amends here. Souchong is much improved and his brilliancy out of the tapes is going to prove a great asset. Korokio will probably start in the sprint, and as she has won on the course before she may be one of the favourites. - Fernden has been off the scene for a long time and can be passed over. Acora seems to have gone back since her good form at Foxton and Ashhurst, but she has had a short spell and may have freshened up. Hampden went two splendid races at Wanganui, and though he will be meeting a stronger field here, will not disgrace himself. It would not be surprising to see one or two scratchings, but at present Souchong, Hampden and Consent make most appeal. .
