There was a decline of more than a million and a half tons in the volume of shipping passing through the Suez Canal last year, as compared with 1930, the figures being 5366 vessels of 30,028,119 tons net in 1931, and 5761 of 31,668,759 tons the previous year. The decreases amounted to 6.8 per cent, in respect of numbers of vessels, and 5.2 per cent, as regards aggregate tonnage. These facts provide clear indications of the crisis in the shipping trade generally, and on the Eastern routes particularly, and the situation is thrown into even sharper relief by the disclosure that last year the aggregate tonnage of laden vessels was only 26,858,798 tons, or almost two million tons less than in 1930, whilst the tonnage in ballast rose by 340,030 to 3,109,321 tons, the percentage of the total advancing from 8.9 to 10.6. The monthly totals are equally interesting, for they show that there was a much more noticeable decrease in traffic during the second half of the year than during the first six months. In January, February and March the declines were respectively 140,810, 179,984 and 133,920 tons. In April there was a surprising advance of 60,973 tons, but May and June showed further decreases of 62,142 and 43,776 tons. The retrograde movement then continued for the rest of the year, the decreases, for the next six months in order being 134,637, 149,292, 140,365, 120,128, 160,264 and 116,295 tons.
