MR. A. H. BAXTER FAREWELLED.
i SERVICE TO PUBLIC SCHOOL. At the meeting of the Inglewood School Committee on Wednesday evening Mr. A- H. Baxter, chairman, who leaves on Friday to take up the position of bank manager at Marton, was presented by the members of the committee and the headmaster, Mr. McKinney, with a cigarette case. Air. Martin Sutherland, in making the presentation, stated that when a short time ago they farewelled the secretary, Mr. Kirk, little did they think that, so soon they would be farewellinrr the chairman. Mr. Baxter, he stated, °had undoubtedly set an example as chairman, and it was with deep regret they parted with, him. Mr. McKinney said that he as headmaster had undoubtedly been extremely fortunate in having a chairman such as Mr. Baxter. On behalf of the staff he wished. Mr. Baxter well. Mr. Baxter in reply said that it was with regret he left North Taranaki as it had been greatly to his liking. When he was moved to Inglewood he had heard , great descriptions of the terrible “hole” °it was and how it rained every day in the year, but fortunately this was not correct and he had spent a very enjoyable time in the town. It had been a peasure to be on the school committee. He hoped that what he had done was for the good of the school. • SCHOOL COMMITTEE AFFAIRS. The monthly meeting of the Inglewood School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, when the chairman, Mr. A. H. Baxter, and Messrs. C. Reed, A. J. Reeve, M. Sutherland (secretary), P. Speechly and the headmaster, Mr. McKinney, were present. A letter was received from the Education Board asking that the school be closed for pne day during the week ending March 11 to enable the teachers to attend the refresher courses. Notice was received that in futme the dental clinics at Inglewod and Stratford would be regarded as/ separate units. The Inglewood school committee would therefore in future be debited only with the contribution in respect of the services of the nurse stationed at Inglewood, and if at any time the work at Inglewood was well in hand and the nurse was transferred elsewhere, the committee would be credited for the period the nurse was absent. Nurse Ferguson, temporarily stationed at Hawera, would return to Inglewood towards the end of next week. Mr. McKinney reported that the roll was 292 with the average attendance for the last four weeks 269.7, 276.2, 276.8 and 271.2. The firewood supply for win’.ter had not come to hand, and the hedge around the school needed trimming. The swimming week was most successful and the pupils were grateful to all who gave their time to instruct them. It was decided to order two cords of firewood. A tender of £7 was accepted for the trimming of the holly hedge around the school. MEN’S HOCKEY CLUB RE-FORMED A meeting convened to re-form the Inglewod Men’s Hockey Club was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a large attendance. . Mr. L. Old was elected to the chair. , It was unanimously decided to reform the club, and 22 present stated, their intention of joining. / The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.; president, Mr. L- Old; vice-presidents, five elected; secretary, Mr. R. Evetts; club captain, Mr. H. Evans;'delegates to association, president and secretary; selection committee, Messrs.' H. Evans, G. Barry and V. Timms; committee, Messrs. C. Shotter, G. Barry, C. Ladbrooke, V. Timms, L. Old and R. Evetts. It was decided that maroon should, be the club colour. SWIMMING CUP WINNERS. As the result of the second of the series of races held on Wednesday evening by the Inglewood Swimming Club, Miss M. Sutton is the winner of the McAllister rose bowl and H. Pine of the O’Neill Cup. The cups are held for one year. More races have yet to be contested for the Stone Cup. i The races resulted:— Stone Cup. Final men’s 100 yards: V. Speakman 1, D. Humphbreys 2, C. McKay 3. 1 L. O’Neill Cup. Boys’ 100 yards; H. Pine 1, M. Lindsay 2, J. Leslie 3. McAllister Rose Bowl. Ladies’ 75 yards: M. Sutton 1, C. Devereux 2, L. Sutton 3. Although the water was very chilly the races were evenly contested, and good times were registered. • —- I Another of the series of races for the Stone Cup under the auspices of the Inglewood Swimming Club was swum over 75 yards yesterday and resulted: V. Speakman 1, C. McKay 2. This places both Speakman and McKay equal with 6 points for the cup. INGLEWOOD CLUB CYCLING. Another of the series of the Inglewood Cycle Club races was held at Jubilee Park last evening, when the 14 and 2 miles races were contested. The IJmile was a closely contested race and ended in Zimmerman beating Mace by a wheel. The 2-mile was an easy win for Gyde. The Inglewood Municipal Band was in attendance.
