NORFOLK ANNUAL SHOW

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED. STRIKING HANDWORK DISPLAY. With entries easily eclipsing all previous records in number and of a high standard of quality, the annual school and ■ district show which was held at Norfolk Road yesterday was an outstanding success. So large were the entries that it was necessary to erect a large marquee in which to house the children’s section, and even then there was not too much room. The schedule was of a very comprehensive nature, catering for every section of the community, and the entries showed that this was appreciated. The school itself was devoted to the district exhibits, and despite the rough weather that has prevailed there was a very colourful display of flowers. The judge, Mr. V. C. Davies, expressed himself as surprised at the wonderful competition in the majority of classes, which was more than he had expected to meet at a country show. The quality, too, was generally good, marigolds and asters being particularly fine, as was also the decorative section. Miss E. Trimble won the Norfolk Rose Bowl for most points in flowers and Mrs. L. D. Brown won the decorative class. The vegetable section was a particularly strong one, there being very large entries in all sections, whilst the quality of the vegetables was eloquent of the fertility ,of the soil in the district and the knowledge of husbandry possessed by the residents. Huge cabbages, pumpkins and marrows, well grown carrots, parsnips, swedes, potatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables were all fit to take prizes in any show. Mr. Burgess won the Hardy Cup points prize. The fancy work section comprised numerous, beautifully designed and daintily executed articles, the judges having a difficult task. In this section there were on exhibition only a number of paintings by a local young lady, Miss Cossey, who shows promise as an artist. Miss R. Clow won the points prize. The home industries section also provided very keen competition, there being a delectable display pf culinary skill. Mrs. E. Fischer won tne Norfolk Cup points .prize and Mrs. J. D. Wright secured, the Maetzig Cup for most points in the show.

FINE DISPLAY BY CHILDREN.

A striking feature of the show was the children’s sieti-jn, which covered a very wide range. Handwork was particularly strong and it must have been an eye-opener to many to view the variety of beautiful and useful things that the children have bean taught to manufacture by their teachers, Mrs. Whitaker and Miss Leech, out of waste material. In fact, when one looks at the ingenuity in design and the skill in ■working various odds and ends one may well say that/fiothiug can be classified as waste.

It was surprising what had been made from sugar bags, old socks, benzine tins, etc., even pine needles forming the prin-' cipal component of a very serviceable basket, whilst old milking machine inflators made pretty vases. Pungas were turned into garden flower pots and old motor tubes were put to a variety of uses, including slippers and wall pockets. Raffia work took a prominent place, whilst there were collections of weeds, ferns and grasses that must have taken some time to prepare, as had the albums of illustrations of topical subjects. Plasticene gave the infants scope to exercise their skill, and they had constructed a wide range of articles. The seniors had some advanced models of Meccano as well as ships and aeroplanes, the whole display being'a credit to the children and their teachers. Afessrs. Duncan and Davies were represented by a display of flowers, including Polyantha roses, shrubs and bulbs, and Egarr’s by a display of flowers and floral work.

In the absence of Airs. W. J. Polson, ALP., who was to have opened the show, Airs. W. J. Bryne and Aliss Porter, whilst mittee, performed the official opening.' He thanked all who had assisted to make the show the success it was, including the exhibitors, the judges and the stewards. i:

Well stocked stalls were conducted by Airs. W. J. Bryne and Aliss Porter, whilst the afternoon tea was controlled by Mesdames A. Reardon and A. Dodunski. Side shows were in charge of Alessrs. Al. Burgess, J. Cuthbert and W. Corney, and the sheep-guessing of Air. A. Porter.

The children had a good time, races being held in a paddock across the road, those in charge being Messrs. W. Whitaker, AV. Alarsh, A. Reardon and A. Dodunski. Mr. A. M. Allen had charge of the cow judging and a demonstration on a horse was given to a very interested gathering by Air. J. W. HillMotion. The district committee, of which Mr. H. Trimble was president, Air. W. J. Bryne chairman and Alessrs. L. D. Brown and V 7. Stephens honorary secretaries, deserves to be congratulated on the success achieved.

There was a large attendance last night, and at the conclusion of the show a dance was held, music being provided by Mrs. Trass. Air. W. J. Bryne was master of cerepionies. Results of the judging are: COW JUDGING COMPETITION.

The cow judging competition created considerable interest, the judge, Air. D. O’Sullivan, having an unenviable task in sorting out. the winners. Alcmbers of the. fair sex captured all the prizes, the result being: Airs. W. Brown 1, Aliss Maida Corney 2, Airs. A. Matthews 3.
