DEPLETION OF TROUT STOCKS. MYSTERY AT RATAPIKO LAKE. There is a mystery surrounding the hydro lake at Ratapiko which the council of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society intends if possible to solve. The lake comes within the district of the Taranaki society but the Stratford society has been stocking it with trout for some years. Last year, for instance, two men secured 300 trout from the lake. Recently, however, the trout have become unnaturally scarce, and the council at its meeting last night discussed possible explanation of the problem. Various theories were advanced, but members were agreed that an investigation should be instituted. The permission of the Taranaki society for the council to conduct an extensive examination of the lake will be sought.
