CONTROLLING CABBAGE PEST
ITS NATURAL ENEMY IMPORTED."
ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT. <
By Talegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night. Stating that the white butterfly pest had invaded portions of the North Island and market-gardeners and farmers in the south were apprehensive lest it should invade their farms, Air. R, W. Hawke (Co., Kaiapoi) asked .in the House of Representatives this afternoon what steps the Department of Agriculture was taking to prevent the spread of the pest. The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. C. E. Macmillan) replied that the department had already secured from Europe a large consignment of a natural enemy (apanteles g’-meratus) of the cabbage butterfly and arrangements had been made for further shipments of this insect, which attacked only the cabbage moth and should, if established here, prove very effective in controlling the pest.
