NEW TAXATION MEASURE
By Telegraph—Press Aasn.— Copyright. Rec. 7.50 p.m. Sydney, Mqrch 8. Mr. Justice K. W. Street upheld the appeal of Eric Campbell, leader of the New Guard, against his conviction a the Police Court on a charge of having used offensive language during a public speech in which he attacked Mr. an o on January 11. The Governor on Friday will receive a deputation from the New Guard, which will present a petition bearing hundreds of thousands of signatures asking for the dissolution of the New South Wales Parliament. ‘ The Large Estates Taxation Bill was introduced in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly by the Minister of'Lands (Mr. Tully). The Bill was designed, he said, to break up large holdings. Taxation would be payable on the total unimproved value of land after a deduction of £BOOO. The Bill would become operative at the beginning of the financial year. The Minister declared that holders of large estates were a menace to the progress of the State. Scores of ablebodied sons of farmers were unable to obtain cultivable land at a reasonable price. He estimated 15,000,000 acres now used for grazing, within fifteen miles of railways and suitable for cultivation, would help to solve the everincreasing deficit of the railways.
