CHORAL SOCIETY MEETING
SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED. COMMENCING THE NEW SEASON. A successful season just concluded was chronicled in the report submitted to the annual meeting of the New . Plymouth Choral Society last night. Judging by the enthusiasm displayed the society should have another successful season, as immediately the annual meeting concluded the first rehearsal of “Maritama,” which has been selected for the first recital of the Beason, was held. Mr. H. *V. S. Griffiths, patron of the society, presided, there being an attendance of over 40 members. Several apologies were also read. The balance-sheet showed that receipts had 'been £lB9 IDs' 9d, the principal items being active members’ subscriptions £32 Ils Od, honorary members’ subscriptions £92 6s 6d, concert receipts £4l 7s 9d, music week committee £5, Dickens’ evening £l7 15s. Expenditure totalled £lB7 12s, including soloists £46 19s 6d, hire of music £2O 15s 3d, theatre rent £24 4s 6d, amusement tax £l6 16s, practice hall £5 ss, printing and advertising £34 9s, erection of platform £l2 14s, hire of seats £4 14s, theatre staff £6 ss, postage and telegrams £4 8s lid, freight and cartage £6 5s 4d, bank charges and interest £2 12s lid. Assets totalled £lO2 17s and liabilities £59 9s sd, leaving a credit balance of £43 14s 7d. Thei chairman congratulated the society on presenting such a satisfactory balancesheet. Despite the fact that it had been a most distressing year from a musical point of view the society had more than held its own. The-year had been commenced with a debit of £34 and ended with a debit of £32. With the continued cooperation of members the society should be able to show a clean sheet at the next annual meeting. He expressed appreciation of the splendid attendance at the annual meeting and the unanimity that' appeared to exist in the society, there being a cooperation (between the officers and the members that was the keynote of success. The successful result of Music Week was due to the co-operation of all the musical organisations in the town. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths; president, Dr. E. A. Walker (re-elected); vice-presidents, thirteen were elected; conductor, Mr. R. L. Cooper'; pianiste, Miss A. Horner; assistant pianist, Mr. C. Campbell; secretary, Mr. J. Sheat; librarian, Miss W. Sole; committee, Messrs. A. W. Morrison, W. G. Richardson, E; Riding, C. Campbell, H. C. Gatland, C. Morshead; ladies’ social committee, Mesdames J. H. Sheat, A. W. Morrison, J. A. Henry, L. H. Goss, E. T. Scott, Misses I. Ibboteon and N. Gleeson. i Appreciation was expressed at the improvement in the health of Mrs. R. L. Cooper, who had been for many years pianiste for the society, and it was unanimously resolved to forward her a congratulatory letter.
