ARCHBISHOP CATTANEO
POSSIBLE NEW CARDINAL.
COMING VISIT TO ROME. The departure for Rome from Sydney on January 30 of the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Cattaneo, raises the question whether he will be created a Cardinal. Tn introducing Archbishop Cattaneo, who delivered a broadcast address on the night of January 28, Monsignor Meany said that, some time ago, when it was reported that Archbishop Cattaneo was going to Europe, it was inferred that he was to be recalled to Rome and created a Cardinal. “Perhaps,” added Monsignor Meany, “they are building better than they know. I know that the day that Archbishop Cattaneo is definitely recalled from Australia to Rome he will be created a Cardinal. I am, therefore, in a very delicate position to-night. If I wished him to be created a Cardinal, it would mean that I wmuld wish him to be recalled from Australia. If I wished him to come back to Australia, where he has .won our deep affection, I might be depriving him of the Red Hat.” Archbishop Cattaneo, in his address, made no reference to the question raised by Monsignor Meany. Since his appointment to Australia in 1917, Dr. Cattaneo has visited Rome three times, ad limina. After reporting to the Pope on the territory assigned to his care, Dr. Cattaneo will enjoy a short holiday in Italy, and will then proceed to the Eucharistic Congress, which will be held in Dublin next June. The question of Archbishop Cattaneo’s future
activities will be determined by the Pope later this year. . Archbishop Cattaneo was born at Novi Ligure, Italy, in 1866, and was ordained in 1891. From 1912 to 1917 he was rector of the Propaganda College, Rome, and was then appointed to succeed Cardinal Cerretti as Apostolic Delegate to Australasia.
