DANGER FROM SHARK
A THRILLING INCIDENT. BATHER’S NARROW ESCAPE. A thrilling incident occurred at Bronte before dusk one night recently, says a Sydney newspaper. Scores of people saw a’ large shark pass within a few feet of a bather, who was swimming in an isolated position about 20yds. further from the shore than anybody else. The shark was first seen by a group of people on the hill on the southern side of the beach. It was cruising slowly near the surface, and from time to time its' dorsal fin could be clearly seen. The people on the hill shouted a warning to others on the beach and the cry of “Shark, Shark!” was taken up. Those bathers who were near enough in-shore to hear this i warning hurriedly made for the beach, but one youth, who was riding an inflated rubber surfing toy, remained unaware of his danger. There was a tense moment when the shark appeared to quicken its speed and turn in the bather’s direction. It passed very close to him and turned, evidently to make an attack. In the meantime, however, the youth secured a “shoot” on a breaker and came swiftly toward the shore.
