WOMEN’S DIVISION.

GATHERING AT AUROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

There was a very large attendance at the monthly W.D.F.U. meeting on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs. Benton (president) presided and gave a number of recipes pertaining to economy and thrift. One of these dealt with the preparation of leather from a cowhide by the following method: Take one bucketful of burnt lime, mixed with enough water to cover the hide in a barrel or large milk-can; soak the hide for ten days, turning frequently; then take out, spread on- the floor (concrete for preference) hair side up and scrape off the hair; after taking off all the hair, soak for two days in a bucketful of bran with water to cover. This cleans hide. Next soak for ten days in a solution of 101 b. salt, 101 b. ground alum, and loz. of oxalic acid, mixing the materials with sufficient water to cover the hide and turning often. Then tack the hide on a wall and stretch it as tight as possible in a shady place. When dry it is ready for use and is suitable for leg-ropes, reins, bridles, pole straps, etc. A beautiful example of this leather was exhibited.

The following formula for controlling mammitis was also given: 11b. clorinated lime, 41b. washing soda, 1 gallon water, 6oz. common salt. Dissolve soda in a gallon of hot water and let it get cold. Stir in the lime, add 6oz. salt and agitate it at intervals for an hour. Cover and let the mixture settle. Bottle the clear fluid, cork, and keep in the dark. Use half a pint of this solution to four gallons of cold water for washing teats, aud dipping teat-cups after milking. Rinse cups afterwards in clean cold water.

Miss Duff kindly supervised afternoon tea.
