Miss Milana Jank, of Germany, made the first and only crossing of the Alps between Vienna and Mont Blanc. She accomplished the journey on skis, covering the distance of 1400 miles in 146 days. Another woman mountaineer, Miss Annie Peck, an American, was recently awarded Al Amerito, the highest decoration of Chile, on her 18th birthday.

New Zealand readers will be interested to learn of the engagement of Miss Jacqueline Nathan, of Auckland, to Mr. Arthur Sebag-Mdntefiore, elder son of the late Robert and the Hon. Mrs. SebagMontefiore, of Cleveland Row, S.W.I, and of East Cliff Lodge, Ramsgate. Miss ■Nathan is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Nathan.

Private* advice has been received of the marriage in London of Mr. Norman J. S. White, who went to London some 3| years ago to study architecture, and has now secured his A.R.1.8.A. degree. The bride was Miss Sullivan, a daughter of Mr. Sergeant Sullivan, K.C., for the Inner Temple, London. Sergeant Sullivan was formerly the leader of the Irish Bar, and became world-famous as an advocate for the defence of Sir Roger Casement on his appeal against his conviction for treason in the House of Lords during the war. Mr. Norman White is the’eldest son of Mr. Henry E. White, who, won the architectural competition for the Dilworth School buildings, and is a nephew of Mr. C. J. L. White, of Dunedin.

On Monday evening last the Citizens’ Band Hall was the scene of happy festivity, when a farewell dance was given in honour of Mrs. S. Pivac and family, of Hawera, who have been spending the summer vacation in New Plymouth. About 80 friends were present, and during the evening were entertained by a tap-dancing exhibition by Mr. Harvey Bateman, followed by a song by Mr. H. Moon. Later, Fred and Sammy Butler danced for the guests. Music for the evening was supplied by Messrs. Carrington (piano) and McNeill. (violin). Extras were played by Miss F. Taylor (Hawera) and Mr. J. McCackany. TARURUTANGI INSTITUTE.

The Tarurutangi Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday afternoon. There was a good attendance considering the unfavourable weather. Mrs. Warren presided. A wool mat demonstration was given by McGruere, New Plymouth. The idea of the mats being made from wool is to introduce New Zealand -wools. Mrs. Old on behalf of the members thanked Mr. Winks and his assistant. Next month, it was decided, the institute would spend a social afternoon in the hall and have a "bring and buy” stall and a few musical items. Mrs. Street and Mrs. Fabish were hostesses at the afternoon tea. Mrs. Fabish responded on behalf of Mrs. Street and herself to the thanks accorded them. _ Those present were Mesdames P. Warren, T. Potter, C. Old, P. Street, J. Giddy, M. Giddy, N. Martin, J. Bird, S. Arbuckle, T. Smith, A. Kaine, G. Geddy, N. Fabish, Misses I. Street, E. Street, S. Giddy, I. Giddy, R. Longstaff and P.
