Unusually large quantities of tomatoes offered at auction at Auckland on Tuesday, says th® Herald, realised prices in some instances not sufficient to cover the cost of growing them. Some sold for as little as Is a case. Best quality realised about 25.. The recent spell of fine, sunny weather is stated to have ri[/jned the fruit unexpectedly early, causing the season to begin rather prematurely. Another reason advanced for the phenomenally low prices is the lack of demand from the canning factories, which are reported to have large supplies of the pulp held over from last year’s bountiful season.

A considerable volume of business has been done at the Government Tourist Bureau in Auckland since the New Year, says the Herald. Many visitors from overseas are in New Zealand and the inquiries at the Auckland office for travel information have been particularly large. Apart from the popularity of the ordinary tourist attractions, a tendency recently noted has been a widening of interest in the North Auckland district. Several inquiries have recently been made . regarding l%nd development at Kerikeri, and it is thought likely that the visitors have heard of the district from former residents in the East who have ’ taken up properties in North Auckland.

Appeals in some number have been lodged by married women teachers to whom the Auckland Education Board gave three months’ notice of dismissal early in December under the authority of the Finance Act (No. 4) of last session. Originally 52 teachers were affected, but some of them have voluntarily resigned. The appeals will be forwarded to Wellington, after -which, it is expected, steps will be taken to constitute a Teachers’ Appeal Court to deal with, them. The Court will consist of a magistrate as chairman and two assessors, one representing the teachers and the other the Education Board. Appellants may be represented by advocates, but solicitors are not eligible to appear in that capacity. It is probable that the Court will open its sittings! next month.
