LIQUOR SOLD WITHOUT LICENSE. YOUNG • MAN FINED AT HAWERA. When Constable Thomassen visited « dance at Tawhiti on December 18 he found 20 bottles of wine in a motor-car. Subsequent inquiries revealed that a young man, Gordon McLeod,.was selling the wine 'Without a license. McLeod came before Mr.iJ. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Court yesterday and was fined a total of £l2 with costs £l. Ha pleaded guilty to charges of ‘ selling liquor without a license and aiding .'and abetting R. J. H. Nicholas in the sale of wine that was not labelled. On December IS, according to Sergeant Henry, a dance was held at Tawhiti. A mother of a boy attending the dance complained to Constable Thomassen, who went to the hall, where he saw several people under the influence of liquor. In a car he found <a Maori and twenty bottles of wine. The Maori said the wine belonged to “Mac,” who was later found to be McLeod. Nicholas had identified the wine as his and said it was similar to some he had sold to McLeod. A youth admitted to the police having bought a bottle of this wine for 3s. Nicholas said he had sold McLeod two gallons of wine. McLeod had- been convicted of a previous offence and had for some time been suspected of this illicit trade. “Yours is a far more serious case than the other licensing cases I have had be-, fore me to-day,” said Mr. Salmon. “You have no right to traffic in liquor in. this way. The circumstances are disgusting.” McLeod was fined £lO on the charge of selling the liquor without a license and £2 on that of not having it labelled. He was allowed a fortnight to pay the fines. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. F. R. L. Bennett, son of Mr. A. Bennett, Manaia, passed in the two divisions of property law and in Roman Law at the recent degree examinations. He is a student of Ot.go University. Mrs. A. C. Carrick, Wellington, i» visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Lundberg, Ararata. Mr. P. Coleman, Hawera, has received advice that at x he recent university examinations he passed in the subject of conflict of laws, and is accordingly now entitled to receive the degree of Bachelor of Laws. Mr. J. J. McCarthy and Mr. C. R. Sturrock, also of Hawera, passed a section of the LL.B, and Mr. F. F. Ching passed in solicitor’s constitutional history.
