RAHOTU BOWLING CLUB

OPENING OF NEW PAVILION. .RECORD OF STEADY PROGRESS. Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of its members the Rahotu Bowling Club has made steady but marked progress since its formation 12 years ago. Started in a modest way with a four-rink green on a corner of the recreation ground, the club transferred last season to a full-sized eight-riuk. green centrally situated at the back of the public hall, and yesterday held tho official opening of the new pavilion. The building, which is of a neat and attractive design, is in concrete, finished in rough cast and is of bungalow style. It is 30 feet long by 18 feet wide, six feet of the width being open verandah supported by three concrete pillars. The main room is 18 feet long by 12 feet wide, and there are on either side rooms partitioned off with asbestos sheeting 12 feet long by 6 feet wide, one for the use of the ladies in preparing afternoon tea and the other for the use of members..

The building was designed by Mr. A. Linforth, who has taken a keen interest iu the progress of the club, and was erected by the voluntary labour of members under the supervision of Messrs. A. Linforth and J. Williamson. The green is fully equipped with all essentials, including adequate shelter, a, good water supply, and is a green that should in a year or two he equal to the best in Taranaki. ■

Ideal weather conditions prevailed, but the attendance was disappointing, the club having prepared for visitors from all parts of Taranaki, including representatives of the Taranaki Bowling Centre. Rahotu Club members mustered in full strength and there was a representative attendance from the Warea Club, which was the only visiting club represented. Those present were welcomed by the club president, Mr. W. C. Green, who called on Mr. Jas. Young to officially open the pavilion. Mr. Young congratulated the club in possessing such a splendid green, which he recognised had required the expenditure of a great deal of time and money. He congratulated the club on its pavilion, remarking that the success achieved in connection with the organisation of the club was a tribute to all who had been connected with it. He called on Mrs. A. F. Chapman, whose late husband was the first president of the club, to cut the blue and black ribbons, the club’s colours, that were stretched across the entrance. Cheers were given for the ladies, who had assisted the club in various ways.

The pavilion had been beautifully decorated by Mrs. R. Inder with coloured streamers and Chinese lanterns suspended from the ceiling. The tables were prettily decorated with streamers and sweet peas. Afternoon tea provided by the wives of the members was dispensed under the supervision of Mesdames R. Inder and T. C. Farquhar. A match between rinks picked, by the president and vice-president resulted in a win for the vice-president. Details are:— ■

Complete arrangements had been made by the members of the committee, and particularly the president and the act-ing-secretary (Mr. R. Inder), who was taking the place of Mr. E. D. Whittle, at present on holiday in the Auckland district. ■Since its inception the club has had four presidents, the late Mr. A. F. Chapman filling the position from 192021 to 1924-25. Mr. W. C. Green, the present president, has also held the position for five years, 1925-26, 1927-28 and 1929-30 to 1931-32. Mr. R. L. Inder, 1926-27, and Mr. H. . G. Clark, 1928-29, were presidents for one year each. There have also been five secretaries, Mr. M. Hughson holding the position for the first year, Mr. G. Bell for the next two years, Mr. A. Lowry for three years, Mr. T. C. Farquhar for four years, and Mr. E. D. Whittle for the last two years.
