REVIVAL OF GOLD MINING
RETIRING MINISTER’S FORECAST. ENCOURAGING PROSPECTING.
An increasing development of goldmining in New Zealand is predicted by the retiring Minister for Mines (the Hon. D. Jones), who, in a statement to the Christchurch Press urged the Government to encourage prospecting over all the mining areas of New Zealand. “The portfolio of Mines is one in which I have taken the keenest possible interest,” said Mr. Jones, “because I could see what a great development. would take place if the work were systematically undertaken. During the last few months there has been a marked development of mining, and a number of schemes which I have started are promising very useful results. Many of the old water-races which fell into disuse when gold was cheap and wages were higher could now well be reconstructed in conjunction with the Minister for Unemployment, and the water brought on to areas in former days could now be very profitably used. 1 “The large amount of prospecting being done to-day in all parts of the gold-bearing country of the Dominion is certain to bring forward some valuable finds of gold. Apparently we got in the early days most of the easy gold, but I have no doubt that there are many important discoveries still to be made. Gold is one of the most soughtafter of our products, and I believe that the Government would be well advised to push forward, most energetically, prospecting over all the gold-min-ing areyis of New Zealand.”
