CASE OF GENUINE HARDSHIP

SETTLER REQUIRES ACCESS. POSITION OF KAWEORA ROAD. A case that was recognised by every member of the council as one of hardship was before the Egmont County Council yesterday, when a letter was received from Mr. A. F. Thompson, a settler on the Kaweqra Road, asking the position regarding the opening of that road. He pointed out that he had no outlet but had been using Mr. W. C. Clement’s tram line to convey a little cream. He had no right-of-way through that property. His position now was that after making an effort to work his section and support his family he must sell his cows. Moreover, he had no work. His neighbour was in the same position as himself. It was essential that they have help. They walked 12 miles daily to work on the Kiri Road, which was already formed. The chairman said he understood the Public Works Department had intended to complete the road. The engineer stated that a sum of money had been placed on the estimates but he did not know whether it was available.

The chairman recognised that it was a case of hardship. It was certainly essential that the settlers should be given access, and he thought that they should forward the letter .to the Public Works Department and the Minister of Public Works with a request that the work should be put in hand. The council could not do anything as the road at present was all in bush. If, however, the Public Works Department was not prepared to carry out the work it should be asked to make the money available and the council would then do the work. The settlers concerned could be employed to do the work as it would enable them to live until such time as they had access. The council had previously inspected the road. It was resolved to forward the letter to the Alinister of Public Works.
