OBJECTION BY THE COUNCIL. PRESENT SYSTEM DEFENDED. • By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Jan. 11. “Whilst the New Zealand Cricket Council is happy at all times to receive suggestions that appear to be for the betterment of the game, it is difficult to discern anything of practical use in Mr. Hay’s remarks,” said Mr. E. (R. Caygill, chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, replying to a statement made on Saturday by Mr. Hay, manager of the 1927 New Zealand team. Mr. Hay said there was room for better organisation and advocated the employment of a full-time paid secretary. Mr. Caygill said that the appointment would involve much increased expense, which was out of the question in these times. 1
“Incidentally,” he said, “it will be of interest to recall that the Australian control of cricket is arranged very much on the same lines as our own, and the secretary of th© Board of Control is not a full-time secretary.” Mr. Caygill said that the objects of the council were being accomplished with the present organisation, and the fact that no fewer than nine tours had been arranged in the past eleven years demonstrated that something very definite had been done.
