CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS
r , - 1 NORTH ISLAND GATHERING. At the North Island croquet championship at Palmerston North on Saturday the outstanding event was W. J. Robertson’s (Palmerston North) defeat of A. J. Gibbs (Patea) in the open singles championship. Robertson was playing almost perfect croquet. In the first of the two games, when Gibbs was well in the lead, Robertson made an all-round break with the yellow ball. He then peeled his opponent’s yellow ball and, putting it on the peg, ‘‘retired.” Gibbs shot and missed, after which Robertson finished the game. In the second match Gibbs made an allround break, which Robertson followed with a two-round break, and then peeled the red and finished. Details of the play are as follow:— OPEN CHAMPION SINGLES. First Round. Mrs. Watkins beat Mrs. Bartlett 26 —23, 26—19, 26—10. Second Round. A. J. Gibbs beat Mrs. Lowery, 26—16, 26—2. W. J. Robertson beat Mrs, Caldow 26—11, 26—23. Semi-final. W. J.
