FORMER THIEF CONVERTS MOTOR. CONSTABLE jumps on the step. CHASE THROUGH- CITY STREETS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Discharged from prison yesterday tnorning after serving a sentence of tiree months- for stealing money from a motor-bus, Lindsay Edist Edward Garner, a panel-beater, aged 21, converted a motor-car to his own use. and was- arrested in Customhouse Quay after he hud been chased .by constables through the city streets. When he appeared before Mr. T. B. McNeill, S.M., at the Police Court, this afternoon, he was sent back to gaol for another period bf three months. 6ub-In*pector Lopdell stated the car was taken from the city early last night and Garner, with another man and some girls, took it to a party at Kaiwarra. Th* car was reported missing, and late at night Constable Grant saw it going up Taranaki Street and followed it through to Willis Street, where he saw a man and three girls alight. When he reached the car he saw Garner sitting la the driver’s seat. There waa also a girt in the car. As the constable approached Garner ittrted the car, but. the constable jumped on the running board, and, although Garner swerved the car from side to side in an endeavour to throw him off, the constable managed to stop it. Garner then jumped from the car and ran down Ghuznee Street into Sturdee street, where Constable Fletcher took up the chase and ultimately arrested him in Customhouse Quay.
