GIBRALTAR’S GOOD SEVEN BALLOON GOES WELL AT HAWERA. GOLD DAWN IN GOOD FETTLE. There was plenty of activity on the New Plymouth track yesterday moming, when most of the horses engaged on Saturday were galloped. Ail the fast work took place on the trial grass, which was in fine order. R. Barlow was the only one to work before breakfast. He eent Sparkling Morn and March Alone half a mile In 52 2-ssec, both moving freely. His other two, Monaghan and Cornerman, could have improved on their Imin 34isec for seven furlongs. Arvada, Green Patch and Playground were not going much better toan a strong half pace over a circuit. The trio, however, are in excellent order for the holiday racing. Havering and Psychologist went once round at three-quarter pace. There is no doubt that Havering has come through a sound preparation and » very Nothing serious was asked of Paparua and Royal ‘Bengal, who did easy half-pace work. Glow-light led Garrick most of the way over five furlongs, but the latter finished on well and had a slight advantage at the post in Imin 4 4-ssec. Garrick is on the improve, but Glowlight went well without being bustled. Orapai, The Swell and singer went well over seven furlongs in Imin 32 4-ssec, the last five taking Imin 6sec. All shaped well, especially Orapai and The' Swell, who were under a pull throughout. Orapai, who had his Christmas Handicap rider, L. Dulieu, aboard was always going nicely, but The Swell showed that he will soon be back to his best. Don’t Lap was not all out to do Imin ssec for five furlongs, moving very freely all the way. With slightly the better of the start Gold Dawn just beat Easter Time home over six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec. They did not go fast over the first furlong, which took 14sec, but the pace was on over the last five, which were reded off in Imin 1 3-ssec. Gold Dawn moved with all ber usual freedom, but Easter Time, who was on the outside, finished on well. True Lap was exercised on the inside. He is looking well. Gibraltar was a head in front of Little Doubt, with King’s Archer about half a (length further back, at the conclusion of seven furlongs in Imin 29 3-osee, a rattling good gallop. This is Gibraltar’s best effort to date and the three-year-old finished up his task in great style. He is in great nick and has completely thrown off the soreness that troubled him after his return from Riccarton. ' Little Doubt also went well. He is in good order and his recent work suggests that if he is sent to Awapuni he should not return empty handed. King’s Archer is not usually a good track worker, but despite being on the outside was right up at the finish. Merry Way ran five furlongs under a good pull. .From the way in which the filly is working a race should come her way during the. holidays. The teams of H. A-ussell and A.' E. Neale arrive to-day and may be worked on Thursday. G. Connor, a northern lightweight, has arrived. He learned his business under Mr. JR. Hannon and goes to scale at 7.5. ROUND ABOUT HAWERA. The weather was ideal for training operations at Hawera yesterday, morning, the course proper being open, with the trestles about half-way out, which afforded perfect galloping. Balloon was first to work, going his usual mile and a-quarter at three-quar-ter pace and running home the last two in 25sec. Tentcall alone galloped five furlongs in Imin Ssec. . Chief Link, looking very well, went once round under a. strong pull, and sprinted the last two in 25sec. La Crown galloped half a mile in 50 3-sscc.

■ Orby’s Choice, with Lea Brook, who picked him up at the half-mile post, ran five furlongs in Imin 6sec. Goldzone went a mile at three-quarter pace, running home the last three in 4X>Jsec. » Richfield (J. M. Pine), Attentive (B. Flowers) and Kissless (Duncan) got to the end of six furlongs in Imin 20Jsec, Richfield being ridden out to win by a length. Calamine and Joyspear were companions over a round, going the first couple of furlongs at a slow pace and running the last six in Imin 23sec.

Tavora did a couple of rounds of steady work on the plough. Royal Papa and a Psychology filly ■sprinted two furlongs in 24Jsec. Miss She! (Flowers) turned the tables on 'her stablemate, Bon Eve (J. M. Pine), beating him by two lengths over five furlongs in Imin 6sec. Banbridge (J. M. Pine) and Jadarino (Duncan) were together ■at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec. Hampden (Flowers) was a length in front of Barbacan (W. E. Pine) at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec. Constant Sun and Davistock were together at the end of a gallop over the same distance in Imin 5 3-ssec. J. Brown left for Auckland on Monday with Arouse, Awaken and Silvermine, who are a'll expected to run well at the Christmas carnival.

After breakfast The Tiger did a couple of rounds of routine work on the plough.

Tenacre on the same track went once round at three-quarter pace. Callapat was ridden out to get to the end of six furlongs in Imin 21 l-ssec. Fantastic (J. M. Pine) and Fairy Girl (Sullivan) dashed over three furlongs in 38sec.

Airtight (Duncan) and Royal Acre (Flowers) went a mile at a working gallop, running the last six in Imin 26J sec.

There was a fair amount of interesting work at Ellerslie this morning when the fiemi-dnal gallops for the Auckland meeting took place on the course proper, the poles being about 40 feet from the rails. The going was excellent and several smart gallops _ were recorded. Amonw the Cup candidates _ Tanenri, Compris, Gay Crest aad Admiral Drake

all performed excellently, while Golden Wings, Lady Quex and Llanore also shaped well. The best efforts registered by the two-ycaF-olde were those of Lack, Midinette and Tout le Mond.

Several horses were schooled over the hurdles in the middle, the best displays being aiven by Simeon and Russet Moor. Before breakfast Jaloux worked over a round, being assisted over the last seven furlongs by Azalea. They finished together, the time for the round being 2min 8 4-'ssec, the last seven furlongs taking Imin 34 4-ssec. Jaloux worked lazily/ but Azalea impressed. Tarporley w-as going better than Desert Star over six furlongs in Imin 19 4-ssec. Tarporley has been working well. Hampton Park, Grand Spirit, Golden Spahi and Vilma were associated over six furlongs. The first-named pair finished several lengths in front in Imin 10 l-ssec, the others taking Imin 21 X ”5 see Spoon ran her first three furlongs in 30 4-ssec and six in Imin 21 l-ssec. Vandyke ran six furlongs in Imin 19 Jsee. Full Measure did six furlongs in Imin 20 l-ssec. ' The best six furlongs was credited to Juniper and Admiral Drake in Imin 17 4-ssec. Juniper had the outside running. There was little between Dunraven and Shatter over six furlongs in Imin 18 l-ssec. Dunraven had a pull in the weights. ■ Taneriri had Sir Mond as companion over a mile and a quarter in 2min 17 2-5 sec, the last six furlongs taking Imin 23 2-ssec. They finished on terms, Taneriri pleasing more. A good effort was registered by Pomp, which finished a shade in front of Green Linnet over six furlongs in Imin 18 2-5 sec. Both worked impressively. Lady Quex ran six furlongs in Imin 20 2-osec. 1 Midinette. Tout le Mond and Princess Bell ran five furlongs in Imin ssec. All pleased. ~ Compris, Gay Crest and Peter Jackson did a round in 2min 6 2-ssec, the final seven furlongs taking Imin 32 3-ssec and the last half-mile 52 2-ssec. Gay Crest was in charge 100 yards from the post, but Compris drew up to him and finished about half a length in front. Peter Jackson was several lengths away but is not a good track worker. Great Star alone did a similar distance in 2min 8 3-6 sec and is in first-class fstila.

The best effort over five furlongs was Lack in Imin 4 4-ssec. ‘ Golden Wings alone did a round in 2min 5 l-ssec. Beacon Fire ran six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssec, and has been working well. There was no outstanding gallop after breakfast except that Puriri Park and Merry Lu ran half a mile in 50 l-ssec on the No. 3 grass. GALLOPS AT TAKANINI. The outside of the grass track was in use at Takanini this morning for fast work, and the going was good. Prolyxo and Closing did a pleasing effort over five furlongs in Imin 2 4-ssec. A very smart half-mile was accomplished by High Comedy and Tea Trader in 48 2-ssec. High Comedy is in excellent fettle for the Railway Handicap. Bronze Eagle (Gray), with Knight of Australia (McFarlane) to assist him over the first five furlongs and Heremia to bring him home over the last two, ran a mile in Imin 42sec. The first three furlongs took 38sec, the first half-mile 50 l-ssec and the last half-mile 51 4-5 sec. Bronze Eagle went well. Chief Joy was a length in front of Vali over seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-5 sec. Chief Jewel and Speedmint ran six furlongs in Imin 14sec, a good gallop. Tea Chat (Gray) finished better than usual when he beat Refresher over five furlongs in Imin 1 2-ssec. AWAPUNI TRACK HOLDING. FLAGS WIDE OUT; SLOW TIMES, Palmerston N,, Dec. 22. The course proper at Awapuni was a shade holding this morning, when candidates for the Manawatu meeting were exercised. The majority were sent againsit the watch, but the flags were wide out and the times were slow in consequence. Sahtpot had. a maiden performer, Bonnie Vale, as (partner over five furlongs, running the first two in 26sec. and the full distance in 1.9. Saltpot was going easily at the close. I Beaconsfield had 'half a length advantage over Top Flier after running

six furlongs in 1.21 1-5, the first three taking 39 1-5. ‘Sastrugi, 'which had the better of the poundages, drew away from Happy Hit in t'he straight to cover five furlongs in 1.7, the first two taking 2'6sec. Royal Black had an advantage over ‘Spearmiss at the end of seven furlongs in 1.39, Ibut the latter was finishing strongly. Neither will race on the opening day. Ah Deck and Park Acre were together at the end of six furlongs in 1.25 3-5. Neither was extended.

Patearoa led two maiden candidates, Tegucigalpa and Umpire, at the post after running six furlongs in 1.22. High Heather, with an advantage in weights, was a shade in front of Manawatu, with Merry Damon half a length back. The mile occupied 1.55, the last seven furlongs* taking 1.40 4-5. The first-named is rapidly coming to hand, but Merry Damon appears to be on the down grade. Chief Marionette was a length clear of Black River, with Ythan further back, after covering five furlongs in l.'SJ.' Ythan dropped back suddenly after the first three furlongs, but finished well. Chief Marionette will race at Waipukurau.

•Haulbowline was going more freely than The Mirror at the end of seven furlongs. T'he pair ran the first two furlongs in 2'5 1-5, the half mile in 53 J sec., and the full distance in 1.37 2-5, a satisfactory effort. Thrasher was going better than Benign at the end of six furlongs, which required 1.23 4-5, although they ran the first three in 40 1-5.

'Blacksmith, with a substantial weight in the saddle, ran the first two furlongs of a mile in 27sec., five in 1.6, and the full distance in 1.51 1-5. A fair effort. Chief Clerk had the inside running to lead In the Van at the distance, but the filly was a head m front at the post after registering t'he good time of 1.20 3 -5, , Jean Ladosio left six furlongs (behind in 1.22 2-5, 'but was stopping at the end. Desert Song and Adelphi ran six furlongs in 1.20 2-5. The two southerners are well, particularly the former. King Colossus jumped away with Troian Melody at the mile and a quarter post, picking up Swiftray at the mile, where Trojan Melody retired. Swiftray was a little slow to get moling, but hit the front within the first furlong and was still in front at the distance, but t'he Cup candidate drew on terms at the post. The first two furlongs took 25 3-5 sec., seven 1.35 1-5,

and the full journey in 2.16 2-5, a good performance on the part of King Colossus. Conjuror 11. was sent a round over the battens, ithree fences to five a satisfactory performance. ° Lady Court bowled along at a steady nace on the inside grass. Decree Nisi .and the youngsters fulfilled easy tasks.
