ENTERTAINMENTS

REGENT TO-NIGHT. ’ “P. C. JOSSER.” A rich feast of fun comes to The Regent, New Plymouth, to-night and tomorrow night in “P. C. Josser,” a talkie adaptation and embellishment of Ernie Lotinga’s well-known variety sketch “The Police Force.” Time -was when Ernie Lotinga did a "turn”; to-day he plays full time, and maintains the most seasoned audience in a roar of merriment. Milton Rosmer, who directed this new Gainsborough picture, has transferred all this merriment to the screen, and Lotinga took a deep personal interest in the production, with the-result that the picture is excellent entertainment. P. C. Jimmy Josser is already a wellknown character and his screen escapades, first as a cheerfully incompetent constable, then as a private detective engaged to guard the favourite for a big race, and as a waiter are abundant in humorous touches and funny dialogue. Anyone in need of a hearty laugh should not miss this film. The supportino* programme will include Universal News, "Curiosities” (interest), “Weenie Roast” (cartoon) and “City of Peace” (travelogue). There will be a matinee to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. , OPERA HOUSE TO-MORROW. “BILLY THE KID.” Those who crave action in their pictures will find plenty, of it in King Vidov’s new M.G.M. talkie, “Billy Ki'd,” showing at the New Plymoucu Opera House to-morrow i(Christmas Evej at a matinee at 2 p.m. and in the evening at 8 o’clock.. With John Mack Brown as°the histone Billy, twenty-one-year-old terror of New Mexico in the ’Bo’s, and the inimitable Wallace Beery as Sheriff Garrett, Vidor has recreated what is probably the most exciting tale of the old west. And ho has done the job faithfully, with the only unauthorised addition the. love interest in the person of Kay Johnson who as usual contributes a distinctive charm to her role. All the fervour and adventure of the old frontier days have been included in this picture which depicts the famous threeday' siege-'.which. ends in the burning of the McSween home with “The Kid” makinv a run for his life. Karl. .Dane is funnier than ever as a Swedish cowboy and historic characterisations are admirably portrayed by Wyndham Standing, Russell Simpson, Blanche Fred-erici, Ates, Warner P. Richmond and Janies Marcus. -The shorts will include Metrotone News and ‘Bigger and Better” (comedy). EVERYBODY’S TO-NIGHT. TWO STAR BILL. “Man to Man” and “Going Wild,” an exceptional Warner Bros.
