Mr. C. H. Weston, Auckland, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday and will spend the vacation here. Mr. G. F. Robinson, formerly a resident of New Plymouth, now living in Christchurch, celebrated his 91st birth' day on Saturday. Messrs. L. Lovell and W. S. Thomson, on the staff §f Mr. H. Baily, accountant, both completed their accountancy professional in the recent university examination.

Dr. D. R. L. Stevenson, house surgeon at the New Plymouth hospital and a former All Black, has been awarded the Obstetrical Society’s Auckland travelling scholarship in gynaecology and obstetrics. - : ’’

Colonel Brinsmead, Contrbller of Aviation in Australia, who was injured in a Dutch air liner crash in Siam, is progressing slowly but favourably, the Dutch authorities inform the Australian Press Association.

The Rev. H. Whitby James, Tinui, Wairarapa, has accepted the cure of St. Alary’s Church of England parish, Hawera. vice the Rev. J. R. Young, who is leaving to take up a sirililar office as vicar of Christ Church, Wanganui. Mr. James already is well-known to Hawera parishioners, having conducted this year one of the most successful missions ever held in the St. Mary’s parish. Mr. Joseph Medley, whose death occurred at New Plymouth on Wednesday, was a native of Ulster. He came to New Zealand about 40 years ago and took up a farm at Waiongona. The farm was sold a few years ago and Mr. Medley removed to New Plymouth. About four 'years ago his health commenced to fail and he went to Wellington for treatment, but his health continuing to decline, he returned to New Plymouth. After some months he was taken to the public hospital, where he gradually sank. A tribute to Squadron-Leader T. M. Wilkes, Director of New Zealand Air Services, for the assistance he has given to aero clubs throughout the Dominion, was paid by members of the New Zealand Aero Club at the annual meeting. He was described as “father, brother, master and friend” to flying recruits, and members of the club welcomed him back to the Dominion after his viAit to England. Reference was made also, to the service which the ex-director, WingCommander S. Grant-Dalton, had given in •. the formation and organisation of aero clubs in this country. “His retire; pient is greatly to be regretted,” the annual report said. “His wise advice and practical foresight have been of immense assistance.”

A record of 60 years’ continuous service with.one firm was completed last week by Mr. J. W. Poulgrain, of the legal firm of Miller and Son and Poulgrain, Thames. Air. Poulgrain joined the staff of Alacdonald and Aliller, solicitors, of Thames, on December 15, 1871. In October, 1878, the partnership was dissolved and he accepted the position of managing clerk to Air. J. A. Miller, who continued the’ Thames business. During his long residence in Thames Air. Poulgrain has witnessed all the changes of fortune inseparable from a mining township. He served for 12 years on the Thames Borough Council and was a governor on the Thames High School Board for ten years. He has been a member of the committee of management of the Thames Land, Building and Investment Society for 55 years and a director of the Thames Co-operative Building Society since its inception 25 years ago. The death of Mrs. Mary Jessie Rowe, wife of Mr. AV. H. Rowe, of Dawson Street, New-Plymouth, took place on Friday, after a long illness, at the age of 45 years. Mrs. Rowe was a daughter of Airs. Connell and the late Air. J. J. Connell, who were well known residents of South Taranaki. She was married to Air. Rowe 21 years ago and has lived since in New Plymouth, where her husband has been employed as. a foreman in the Railway Department. She is I survived by her husband and a family of five children (one daughter and four sons). Airs. Rowe had been actively associated with the musical activities of New Plvmouth as a member of the Amateur Operatic Society, in which she took some parts prior to the war. bhe was also for some time a member of the choir of the Choral Society.. She received her early musical education, at the New Plymouth Convent. Requiem Alass was celebrated on Saturday morning, and the funeral took place in the afternoon.
